wow this is just going to be a long thread, i just know it. its one of those things that people say the same thing in a few different ways. i just wanted to say all this, but i just won't define it. that's just me being a jerk i guess, hehe its all good, no worries..
a usually young person who rejects the mores of established society (as by dressing unconventionally or favoring communal living) and advocates a nonviolent ethic; broadly : a long-haired unconventionally dressed young person -according to merriam-webster.com
I guess it is a dumb question.I just was wondering why we're all posted to the Hip Forums under the Hippie coloumn.Half of us think we're hippies the other half deny it.After living the hippie lifestyle for 30-40 years I'm still not one and never will be..I've meet a few on the road though. When I was 13 I started hitching up the coast to big Sur.Hitched to Colorado at 15.Lived on Joan Baez's land in Palo Alto at 16 ended up in Tahoe at 19 where I meet my buddy J.B.We traveled to Michigan together and ended up in Orange County. In 78' we did a marijuana marathon to raise funds for normal. My buddy J.B. is one.Yes we are the same person except I live in Cal and he lives in Texas. The hippies were the ones who helped me with my journeys.Picked me up hitchhiking and gave me food and shelter. Not for good Karma, but because I needed it.Now I see people obsessed with hair and drugs not doing a damn thing for others.I also see kids living the hippie spirit, not caring what you think of them as long as they know they're doing the right thing and I see old farts like myself perpetuating a bunch of bull shit and hype.I prefer peace and love to hair and drugs.
What is a hippie?.......It's a label made up by society to define an individual, or group of indivivduals that fit in to a particular categorie. Personally, I hate labels. The thing that bothers me about any "label" is that in order to "fit in" you have too look the part, act the part and be around others who look and act the part. My point is that so many people claim to be "different" from "mainstream" society, that they become another part of mainstream society. Once you compromise your ideals just to "blend in" you become a lemming. Be true to yourself, not a label!!!
FOLLOW ME TO THE NEAREST CLIFF? NO, FOLLOW YOUR HEART AND DREAMS. WELL PUT. BE YOUR OWN PERSON. DON'T COMPROMISE. YOU GOT IT.
I think when we were young explorers we were told that the path to hippie life was one that when had to forge out on our own. Some of us explored with long hair, alternative music, recreational drugs, non commited lifestyles, disposable relationships... The common thread is usually to be kind to the earth and its creatures (don't pollute, don't kill, put back what you take, add something, do something positive). Some were able to leave a legacy in the form of art, music, literature and others just came and went as simple, quiet folk. There were good meals, nice smells, animals, gardens, colors and experiments. I'm 45 and G*d breathed my life into the northeast part of the United States just at a time that the beatnicks were turning into the hippies, the boys were going to Vietnam, the republicans were telling us bold faced lies and good was being stabbed in the back or shot down from afar. Last month I lopped off over twelve inches of European hair that weighed in at about 8 ounces. It took me about six years to grow it that length and was gone in about thirty minutes. I gave it to a gal who was able to make three small hairpieces for people who can't grow their own hair anymore. This week I begin a course of study in nursing. Eventually I hope to be able to work with people who want to enjoy a short time left on earth. My hair may not be long anymore, and I may not be mistaken for Jesus in the airport anymore, but I am still a hippie. I just wear my pony tail inside my head these days
accepting yourself and others for who you and they are...we were all freaks who discovered each other. We found out we weren't alone...
it doesnt have to do with clothes unless u look at it as a label.. its whats in the inside that counts. peace chickens
