    OK, this is the deal.
I have gained a LOT of weight over the past 15 years. A whole lot. Like almost 100#.
I don't particularly eat alot, I try to keep my calories for the most part about 1500 a day. Sometimes I go over that, and some days, I don't eat anything, so I figure for the most part, it evens out.
I go out and walk, and am very active and running around all the time at work, also, I clean house a lot. Other than that, I don't really go and work out that often. When I DO get to the gym, I prefer walking on the treadmill or lifting weights to riding an exercise bike or running.
Still, gradually, my weight has crept up, and I am to the point where I am sick of it.
Another issue is after I had a hysterectomy, I have a huge gut now, which I never had before. I don't know what the hell to do about that, other than maybe a tummy tuck.
I have always had a problem with my weight, but it didn't get bad until the last 10-15 years or so. What started it is the first time I went on a diet. I was skinny, but not skinny enough. So I lost 10 lbs. Then I gained back 15. This has happened over and over. Til it's gotten to the point it's at now.
When I was in college, I used speed-type things to lose weight (anything I could get ahold of). I would stay up days at a time, cleaning the house, running around like a maniac, and eating very little (like not at all for 3-4 days or more).
I recently got put on the diet drug "phentermine" for the 2nd time (1st time didn't work very well, but I seen lots of others have success with it, and decided to try again).
It works fabulously to make me not eat, and while it is not nearly as fun as "other" things, I can go days without eating if I choose to, although it gives me really bad heartburn to not eat for more than a day.
Well, I've been on it a month and haven't lost shit, in fact, I've actually gained weight, if anything.
I am sick of looking like a cow, and sick of not being able to find anything that looks decent to wear. I HATE wearing jeans, or anything that is not big and baggy and hanging on me. Have I just fried my metabolism by dieting in the past so badly that there is no help? Are there other medicines that may be more effective.
Any response would be appreciated and very helpful. Thanks.

Most diet pills out there are scams perpetrated by criminal corporations. Best thing for you is to adopt a more generally active lifestyle and monitor "what" more than "how much" you put in your body.

If you want to be on something, try a bicycle and leave the drugs at home.

    Just say no.

Your problem is likely with a slow metabolism. It needs adjusting. Drugs won't help you here.

I'm 6'1'' of solid muscle because of my decades long affair with the noble iron horse. I sleep an average of 5 hours a night and consume about 1500-2000 calories a day. Vegetarian.

I completely exhausted a person I was riding with today. She's a fraction of my age. I'm also quite a bit older than yourself.

    Bicycle.

are you actively tracking what you eat and how many calories you consume on a daily basis? if not, start doing that. then we can figure out your base level of what you need to stay at a level weight +/- water weight throughout the day

then the next important step is figuring out how much protein you are actually getting. very important. after this, you can fiddle around with the carbs and fat.

and what exactly are you doing at the gym? tracking what you are doing? if not, start, so we can get a picture of how you progress over time and so you can change what is not working/work on weaknesses/get stronger...

any sort of diet pill or supplement, if they do work, won't work for people who don't have diet and exercised down, so don't worry about them.

if you've only been walking, add a bit of jogging in...walk/jog/walk/jog... progress to ---->walk/run/walk/run
what do you do for lifting? exercises?

there are people here who can guide you, but its a lifestyle you must transition to if you want to see results

Thanks for the input. I know I need to be exercising more, and I need to find a way to fit it into my schedule, which is quite hectic.
My caloric intake varies hugely from day to day. This depends on whether I am being "good" or "bad". Today, I have been bad.
    Examples:
A good day: Breakfast: bowl of raising bran with a little sugar and 2% milk. Lunch: Turkey or ham sandwich, maybe an apple. Supper: Salad, small boneless pork chop.
A bad day (Today): Breakfast: nothing. Lunch: Some pork and beans I found in the fridge. Snack: Rice crispie treat. Supper: Roast beef sandwich, handful of french fries with ketchup. Snack: 2 beers (michelob ultra light, though, lol), 2 jack and cokes, about 8 cigarettes. May have more jack. I freaking LOVE jack daniels.
I am not a big sweets person. I can totally live without ice cream, chocolate, cheescake, etc. I like it, but I don't crave it. I crave things like rolls with butter, baked potatoes with butter and sour cream, prime rib, cheese.
I don't particularly care for exercise, I do enjoy walking in the evenings if it is not terribly hot or cold, and I like exercising with small weights. I am guilty of just vegging out when I am tired, particularly if I've worked all day and then spent the evening cooking and cleaning and picking up after everyone.
I have heard about something called "calorie shifting" where you eat EXACTLY the same thing for maybe a week, and then drastically shift your intake up and down, which somehow confuses your metabolism into burning more calories. I have no idea if that would work. I think it would be harder for me to eat the exact same amount of calories each day than to just not eat at all.
I was pretty anorexic in high school, and would go days without eating or eating very little in order to be skinny. I'm NOT a naturally skinny person, and I probably worried the least about my weight when I was in college and weighed 150-160 lbs (I'm 5'7"). This was probably the ideal weight for me, as I am not a twig. But of course, I couldn't be satisfied with it, and always had to try to lose weight, and be a little tweeker, which has probably helped to get me in the shape I am now.
I'm interested in losing weight not just for my appearance, but because I think it would make me feel better and be healthier.

I have found that CHICKWEED and Letcithin are a great combonation for losings weight. The chickweed shrinks fat cells and the letcithin emulsifies fat... 30 mins of rigorous exercize 3 X a week is sufficient execersize.

A poor combination of foods is what makes it hard to dijest and causes fat to stick in places that hold and expand fat cells.

If I eat something that I know is high in fat, I take 5 letcithin as I eat it, swallowing it with my food. I take the Chickweed 3 capsules 3 X a day with meals.

I got a 'Sports Cord' which is a rubber band type thing that you use as weight resistant, against your own weight.. I hook mine to the doorknob and workout for 20 minutes every couple of days.

You can also look at what your eating together.. no potatoes and meat together, either or but not in the same meal.. no peas and carrots together..if you are eating a lot of starches trade them for LEAFY GREENS, yellow vegies, eat as many raw veggie you can.. no sugary drinks.. check the lable and if it has 'High Fruitcos' forget them, drink water/veggie or fruit juices. If you do need carbs find them in multi grains breads and eat them for lunch as you will use them up during the day.. eat a lite supper consisting of salads and a little protien.. eat fruit and protien for breakfast.. have snacks of fresh raw veggies in a yogurt dip with Rye crackers.

I hope this helps you get a regimement going.

    Bright Blessings
    sh

i wouldnt go on any diet pill. my mom had problems with her wieght and went to the doctor, and you can be able to work something out with a specialist. someone to tell you what you should be eating more of, and less of. what kind of excercise you should be doing, and how many calories you should be taking in. dont ever take a day off of eating, that just makes you gain more wieght.

Have you been checked for an underactive thyroid? Because if you're claiming that you don't eat very much, that you're active, yet you gained almost 100 pounds, something is not right there!

I am no expert but you need something at breakfast time....I like fruit and lots of it. You could also try, instant oatmeal (no milk)with a spoonful of peanutbutter and some chocolate flavored protein powder.

Personally your lunch & supper would have to much salt for me, and as your snacks go...well I do like michelob, but I'm guessing that ALL alcohol is fattening even the "ultra light" kind. Ol Jack Daniels may love you too...that's why it doesn't want to leave your waist. Sorry if that's harsh, but if you leave Jack alone then maybe you wouldn't need a tummy tuck.

You may say that you're not a "sweets" type of person....what was in your rice crispie treat? Even regular meal food usually has some type of sweetener in them...if it's packaged in can's, boxes, ketchup bottles, & whatever.

This is an old-ass thread, but I wanted to add that while this may sound harsh, I have been in your shoes before and I can say that the excuses are easy to make, and they do get made. Even when you're in a place of admitted that you're very overweight and need to lose, it can be almost instinctual to fall to the excuses or even rationalizations. I used to do that, and a friend who is over 100# obese still does it. When I watch her, though, her actions do not match what her memory does - I've seen her put away way more than she realized she did. She flat-out said she does not over-eat, and yet in a 2-day period I saw her not only finish an entire sleeve of Lender's bagels, 2 packages of cream cheese, and a whole 1# package of ham, but also eat an abundance of party snacks at a friend's mixer we attended...so yeah, you can think you don't eat too much and actually you are. It's so easy to get in denial, I'm not trying to bust you over it, just saying that it's generally a fact.

On the thyroid thing, so many people are so quick to default to that as an excuse. While, in some rare cases, it can make it difficult for a person to lose weight and make it take longer, it is even more rare that a person absolutely "can't" lose weight, even with a thyroid condition. It's good to get it checked, mind you, and get on meds if need be, but I have hypothyroidism and have managed to lose 53 pounds and counting.

Diet pills will not help you, ever. Someone also mentioned supplements, but I don't think you need those either. You really don't need anything fancy to lose weight. On the time thing, it's also another easy default excuse, but if you can sit and watch television or play on the computer, then you have time to exercise. I spend way less time doing passive activities. My body is so used to be active now that I really hate spending too much time sitting around when I used to maybe exert myself at work and then at home I'd just collapse in a heap.

One thing that can be okay if controlled is good old fashioned caffeine. I'm not talking tons, but a cup or two of unsweetened coffee or tea per day won't hurt you unless you have some sort of medical condition that makes it dangerous. It'll give you a little energy jolt - being obese does make you more tired. Also when you first start out being active, it really is best to start out in short intervals. Instead of going for an hour straight each day for a workout, maybe do 3 ten minute sessions per day, and then when those become easier, work it up to 4, then 5, then 6, etc.

Also, check out in your area at the YMCA or other gym with a pool and see if they offer deep water exercise classes. It sounds like it would be easy, but I go to the classes at my gym after work. It's an early evening class that happens shortly after I get out of work. I get home a bit later than I usually would, but I sleep like a baby every time I do it. It's hard on the muscles and works you out well, good cardio and strength in one shot, but it doesn't put strain on your joints. The key is to actually work hard and challenge yourself, though...I do see a few people in the class I take kind of taking it a lot easier than they could, heh.

I hope you're still working on it. I hope you've found a positive, balanced, healthy way to do it. It sucks being fat, I've been there. And for anyone who thinks I'm being harsh, I'm just telling it how it is. And having been there myself (still working on it) I'm pretty qualified to comment, lol :)

oh yeah, and alcohol, SO not conducive to weight loss. This is a sacrifice that you have to decide is worth making if you really want to see weight come off. The calories from alcohol do not get used to help your body work/move like other food calories. Because your liver is so busy with the toxic nature of the booze, the carbs in the booze simply get stored as fat on your body. I allow myself an occasional beer, glass of wine, mixed drink, etc. But I ration myself. Drinking is such a social norm it's a hard thing to do, but it's worth doing if you want to feel better and be healthier.

Most diet pills are placebos chock full of caffeine.. they ask you to do things that you could normally do to suppress appetite like the normal warning "make sure to drink 8-10 glasses of water when taking this pill" and most recommend exercise on the label as well... 2 things that will definitely help you lose weight.. without spending the extra $20-40/mo for a "magic pill"

lol, all this talk of diet pills and advertising kinda reminds me of something...those little sidebar ads on Facebook and the like that tell you that there's "one simple rule for getting rid of stomach fat. OBEY!" and shit like that...you must OBEY!!! Too amusing, but I'm sure people do click those links hoping that the "magic cure" for their overweight problems is behind that link...aaaaaah!

What jokerman says is true, too, about the products having pretty sound advice on them which you could get without spending money, for chrissakes there's about a blue million websites that have FREE tips and assistance tools, no wasting of money required! :D Sparkpeople and others have a feature where it'll even print out recipes and a grocery list for the week so you can pretty easily eat healthy with minimal effort. And you can watch exercise video clips on Youtube to learn how to exercise. DUH. It is also kind of ironic how much high-priced, as-seen-on-tv "weight loss programs" that consist of diet guides with an exercise DVD pretty much all deliver the same thing. Whether or not it actually works depends on how well a person sticks to it. It's calories in vs. calories out and getting in shape, DUH. But people will only buy it if it comes in a snazzy package with some kind of logo. *baaaa, we're all a bunch of sheep*

Really if you have any sense and know how to read labels.. you should be fine.. don't a website to tell you how to grocery shop...

basically shop for these 3 items:
    -Fruits
    -Veggies
    -Protein

those are really the only 3 things you should be looking for if you are shopping healthy.. toss in a couple whole grains.. and make sure you are buying low fat/non-trans fat and low sodium... pretty simple actually

If you're 100 pounds overweight and you are taking diet pills without being active enough, you are setting yourself up for a heart attack.

    Diet pills?
If its too good to be true, it is.
Just do pushups, jogging exc. and eat better.

Besides, when you wanna some muscle to look good once you lose that weight, diet pills don't help you build muscle. Unless its steroids in disguise.

Jokerman, with the website thing I was more referring to the fact that if you're just totally clueless about how and what to feed yourself, there are FREE resources out there. And believe me, I have encountered some people who are completely clueless.
