What if a majority of the human race is mentally ill?

I've heard that sanity is something that's subjective to social norms. I, on the other hand, think that social norms can be deranged. When a large segment of the population sees nothing wrong with the rampant greed of our culture and rampant destruction of the eco-system, I generally doubt the sanity or at least rationality of the species .

The rigid, black and white thinking of Fundamentalist religion, partisan politics, and blind nationalism also seems like traits that would be documented in the DSM-V as a set of symptoms if it all applied to a more fringe element of the populace.

People seem to think crazed death cults only come from the fringes, but I have this sense that modern society is like a massive death cult, and nobody even realizes it. We've been sold a false bill of goods, the idea that the indefinite growth of the economy will lead to the colonization of space and some sort of technological utopia on earth. There's a large cultural blind spot to the reality that we'll have exhausted our planetary resources to the extent of mass extinction before we ever get to that point.

Since it is the behaviour of the majority which defines what mental illness is, I don't see how that is possible.

Here's a couple of obvious examples;

Pretty much all Christian sects practice some form of 'communion', a re-enactment of the "last supper"... simulating eating the flesh and drinking the blood of Christ.. displays of jesus nailed to a cross.. blood of the lamb (Passover) ... kinda death-cult sounding I'd say.

How about the most popular sport in America? (Football)
Players in their 30's with brain damage so bad from all the concussions they can't feed themselves or in one recent case commit suicide..yet millions cheer the big hits and yell for the most brutal steroid pumped meatheads to 'kill the QB!!!".

No problem getting fresh meat though, the moneys that good! (and/or most football jocks are just that stupid) and it gets more violent every year.

Not much different than the Roman coliseum games

The human race is mentally ill. Since when did it become right to do anything other than live. Instead of living our lives we HAVE to work so we can have the PRIVELAGE to live. Existence is no longer fun unless other allow it to be so. What is natural is now deemed "illogical or psychotic." We have much to learn from the insane.

The fact that a community has a label and MUST follow the laws of another's is completely inhumane. The fact that I must pay money to exist is slavery. I am working for a government that not only wants my money but my offspring aswell.

This isn't life, this is hell.

Plus, the really overzealous ones are all obsessed with the end of the world and don't think the state of the environment is a valid concern, because they figure armageddon is right around the corner.

There's this huge debate in the news right now about whether or not president Obama believes that an ancient Palestinian man died and rose again as a zombie to save humanity from their shortcomings so that whosoever blindly believes in that myth, despite lack of any evidence, can party forever in an eternal paradise with the Palestinian zombie and his dad.

Its crazy that many people think its bad that a world leader might not hold to this view, even though he's asserted to the media that he does.

Wholeheartedly agree and I feel that the bulk of the issues could be remedied with a simple Melatonin and serotonin replacement therapy program as I'd hazzard the guess the majority of our society does not in fact sleep peacefully.

The fact we've been pumping our bodies full of fluoride for how many generations now? Fluoride in the water leads to a mild buildup of calcium in our Pineal gland, very probably affects its operation.

The Pineal gland is by many considered to be the real nexus point between mind and body and when this gland does not produce what it is allowed to it can lead to mild or severe psychological issues.

I'm told however "modern science" is still "undecided" as to if there is any conclusive connection,,, Comming from a community who in one hand can accept that all we see is just energy while the theory is on paper, yet they totally fail to account for the ramifications of that given the very essence of how our brain communicates to the rest of our nervous system,,, (At least in the polite company of the general public)

What's considered mental illness usually involves both deviance from social norms and dysfunction. The latter is a bit more subjective. Really the only way to define health in is terms of what's normal. It certainly doesn't mean human nature is totally good because it isn't.
