is that many of them would not help cover bc pills yet they cover most of an abortion.

does that make any sense to anyone????

That does sound weird to me. But then again.. birth control pills are free here, even without any insurance.

i've never paid for bc anywhere. whether insured or not. i have paid for office visits, usually a minimal fee, $10-20. hm. i wonder if that's a southern thing.

My best friend's bc wasn't covered on her previous insurance, but I think it's covered now. The insurance I've been under has always covered bc. I honestly don't know about abortions though. But that is REALLY weird...REEEEEAAALY weird.

off topic: I love the script coverage of my military insurance. My bc (seasonale) cost over 100 bucks under my parents insurance, but only 20 under tricare :D. I'm so happy. My zoloft only costs 9 bucks too :D. Freakin great compared to my parents' insurance (blue cross).

I'm pretty sure your insurance does cover BC pills....BUT it depends on the company you work for and whether or not they chose the option of covering BC. My company chose the option of not covering BC pills. But they'll pay for pregnancies and what not (which is more expensive)....

I'm not on birth control pills, so I don't know if my insurance covers them or not, but I assume that they probably do. However, my little sister, who will be 18 this September, is on our mother's insurance still, and my mother's insurance absolutely will not cover birth control pills. My mother is a nurse and works for a Catholic hospital, and the insurance policy that they provide will not cover birth control. It is against their beliefs.

it is definitely weird that a company would not cover the cost of preventing a pregnancy, but they will pay more to cover the cost of an abortion. it's also weird when a company will cover the cost of viagra, but not birth control.

mynameiskc, it is awesome that you have never had to pay for birth control! wow :D if you don't mind me asking, how does that work, though? would your doc just hook you up with a years worth of pills during your visit, or would you have to go back to your doc every few months, or was it a prescription you had to fill that didn't cost anything? i've gotten 2-3 months worth for free from a doc once, but i've always wondered about how people got free b.c. for a longer period of time...

Our insurance had the same thing. You could get two abortions a year (four per lifetime total) but they would not pay for BC. I had to get special dispensation when I needed Depo to treat endometriosis.

I think they had enough complaints, now they do cover BC pills (from what I have heard the copays are really expensive, but then again, they are for everything, and you HAVE to use thier mail order, not a regular pharmacy) but they have eliminated abortion coverage.

They also have so many red tape articles attached to maternity coverage, that many people don't sign up right. Bear and I are still paying off most of Sage's birth, as they told us AFTER she was born, we didn't fill out a "patient control" number request and they denied the maternity and birth coverage. And I had a really expenisve high risk pregnancy.

you can thank regan for that. in the 80's alot of the goverment plans covered sterilization but not bc. his healthcare philosophies trickled down into private companies.

I do understand the insurance companies rationale, but it is very poor logic (and VERY indicative of our healthcare system).

Terminating pregnancy is a medical procedure. Preventing you from getting pregnant is not a medical procedure, or a medical treatment. It is a lifestyle choice. Viagra (and similar drugs) also treat medical conditions.

This is very indicative of our total healthcare system. We wait until treatment is absolutely required before we do anything. It would be much more cost effective to pay for BCP's.

On a similar note, this is true of ALL prescription drugs. All we ever hear about is how expensive they are. In reality, it is MUCH cheaper to treat someone with drugs than to skip treatment, allow a condition to progress, and hospitalize a patient.

For example, how many months of Zocor, at $110 per month, would an insurance company have to pay for before it becomes more expensive than the heart attack it can prevent, at over $17,000? Or the bypass surgery it may prevent, at over $77,000?

You do the math. . .

birth control pills can be used to treat endo, thus birth control pills treat medical conditions for some. the pill also treats hormonal imbalances and all sorts of things. it doesn't just prevent pregnancy ;)

All insurance companies will cover birth control pills if they are being prescribed for a medical purpose. If this is the case, you need to get a letter of prior-authorization from your doctor, stating the medical necessity, and send it to the insurance company.

Those preauth letters are tricky. My dd needed Adderall years ago, when my insurance company considered Adderall a "weight loss drug." The doctor had to write the letter several times. They lied and said they didn't get it, they said it was in the wrong form, ect. Anything to get me to quit trying. We finally prevailed, and now they consider the drug standard treatment, but I've been through preauths for this and Depo for me and it was a HUGE hassle.

I also have to do this for one of my meds, and I go through the same thing EVERY YEAR (with the SAME insurance company)! I am pretty confident it is such a hassle by design. . . they want you to give up.

Mine still doesn't want to cover Adderall if you are over 15 years old. I was diagnosed with ADULT ADD at 19 years old!
