tonight, for the first time, i used hydrogen peroxide to clean my ears. as a little earwax is normal, healthy, and appropriate, its not good to clean your ears out extensively on a regular basis, but wax buildup can be problematic as well. every once in a while, its ok to clean out your ears....

it had been a little while for me, and i'd recently learned of using hydrogen peroxide as a safer alternative to q-tips (cotton swabs/buds). you use just a few drops in the ear canal for a short while, then tilt the head to the other side to evacuate the ear and wipe clean with a tissue...but no cotton swabs/cotton buds!

so i just did it....my mom, and a number of other people, have had this suggested by doctors as one of the best otc means of earwax removal, but its warned that you should not do this too often, or it can dry out the ear canal and ear drum.

anyway, i just finished before i started this thread....and hydrogen peroxide bubbling in the ear is a strange sound and a MUCH stranger feeling.

so what have you tried recently for the first time that felt strange as all get out?

First off, as potentially dangerous as it is, I love the feeling of a q-tip in my ear.

This wasn't recent, but the first time I used a medicated shampoo, selsun blue, and got that cold tingly feeling, that felt really strange.

q-tips are not healthy or safe to use for cleaning one's ears, but i too love the feeling of a q-tip's first contact with my ear when it is badly in need of cleaning...

the most severe problem that can occur with using them to clean your ears is that you can puncture your eardrum. this happens and is by no means unheard of, but it still is relatively uncommon given the vast number of people that use them to clean their ears on a regular basis.

more common but less dangerous is that earwax does not usually build up right near the eardrum in a healthy person, but near the outermost portions of the ear canal. when you have a lot of buildup, you notice a large quantity on the cotton when you're done, but it still pushes more of it farther into the ear than it removes. this leads to increased buildup and clogging, and can be unhealthy.

that said, while its not the best choice if your ears need cleaning, q-tips feel great when you first put them in the ear....its great!

If you get water in your ears from swiming you can do the same thing to get it out.

But, ya the feeling is kinda weird.

yeah but water isnt too good for cleaning your ears, and is just more of a nuiscance than anything. hydrogen peroxide starts bubbling when it goes in your ear, even if the solution is primarily water. it feels FAR wierder than having water stuck in your ears after swimming!.......very odd feeling!!!

I dont think you understood what I ment.

Like, if water gets stuck in your ear you can put alcohol or Hydrogen Peroxide in your ear and it will come out with it.

oh i thought you meant if water gets in your ear it feels really wierd, and tilting your head to the side will expel it.

    i did misunderstand.

water has always been tough to get out of my ears if it gets stuck in there (which is rare)

if it is stuck, its likely due at least somewhat to blockage by earwax.* if alcohol or hydrogen peroxide helps, i would guess it helps by unblocking the ear, allowing for easier removal of the water.

*this is just an assumption, not at all based on anything i've heard, read, or experienced firsthand. if i'm wrong and you know it, feel free to correct me (the information would be welcomed), but do not treat me as stupid for making an educated guess

i had one of my ears clogged before. my dad would get a syringe without a needle, put my head over a plugged sink with warm water in it, and just squirt water in my ear in and out- the sink is there to see if it comes out, it was a tiny brown meteor like thing lol when it did come out xD

I'm sure meteors aren't supposed to fall out of someone's ears. ;)

I've been celibate for a little over 3 weeks. No sex, no self service, nothing.

I'm going for another week, then my bf's home. :D:D:D

I know its not a big deal, 3 weeks, but going from a very active sex life to nothing feels weird.

Green they don't circumsize in england??

And I'm pretty much celibate too only because I don't really like my boyfriend/father of my child, and fiance of 3 years. I mean we do it once in awhile, but it pretty much is few and FAR between!

I'd rather just get stoned and go to sleep usually.

And to Nesta, I love cleaning out my ears with qtips only because it's one of those satisfying things to see the wax that comes out! I'm just careful that's all. I used to hate using rubbing alcohol in the ears though because the smell would be so strong, and it did burn my ears a little.

You can buy otc things to flush ear wax out though.

This thread felt so medical until the whole celibacy thing, which was kinda random. To continue with the randomness, I'm celibate too and I've been since early October. It's a weird thing in me, but it doesnt feel weird, actually it feels right.

circumcision is rare in most of europe except among jews and muslims as far as i am aware.

it is also a disgusting and cruel practice, and should never be done at all except in the rare circumstances in which it is medically necessary.

americans have the dumb idea that its more hygeinic to be circumsized, but this is quite simply false. americans circumsize their babies because its "normal," but i fail to see how mutilating an infant's genitals is appropriate in any circumstance. like i said, there ARE situations where it is medically necessary, but this isn't very common.

circumcision is not a christian practice and has little, if anything, to do with hygeine. it is quite easy to clean yourself either way. many years ago most of the western world had long since stopped the practice, outside of the jewish faith. during the victorian times the practice saw a huge revival, as it was thought to desensitize the glans (the tip of the penis, which as we all know has the highest concentration of nerve endings)

mother nature devised the foreskin to help protect this part of the body from the elements. by removing its natural shield from the elements, the glans is constantly exposed. this doesnt sound like a big deal, but when you take into consideration that the vast majority of the time people are wearing clothes, you begin to ponder the fact that being constantly in contact with cloth, and when in motion constantly being rubbed by cloth, you realize that while it may not desensitize the penis to the extent of eliminating sexual pleasure and the desire to masturbate, it DOES cause friction and irritation to the penis, and does indeed desensitize it to an extent.

a foreskin is a natural and important part of the human reproductive system, and there is nothing appropriate about cutting it off. especially when the child is an infant and has no say in the matter. i highly resent that i was subjected to this as a baby, and though i do not plan to have children i know for a fact that if i ever have a son, there is no way in hell i would EVER allow someone to circumsize him unless it was a medical necessity.

today its mostly americans that still think its appropriate to do, outside of the very few religions that require it (such as judaism and islam). its a barbaric and inhumane practice and i personally think it should be done away with.

a lot of americans think an uncircumsized penis looks "wierd," but only because it looks so different from what we're used to. it is the natural form of the human body, and ought to be left as it is unless it is necessary for medical reasons or if the individual decides to allow it to be done later in life for religious or cosmetic reasons.
