What does it mean to be an American?

In honor of the inauguration I have to write an essay about that in my English class. Thankfully to say i'm off on a good start. I also made a 95 in that class for the semester. What does being an American mean to you people?

being american means I have the right to hate Barack Obama and no one can do anything about it.

It means I was born here and and I break laws sometimes because we have some pretty ridiculous ones.

being american means being the descendants of the people who founded this country.
