Most of my American history on England is the Revolutionary war and the World Wars. Nothing before or in between unless you want to learn on your own. I'm sure it's not even called the Revolutionary War in England. It's a minor conflict in one of many colonies. Being British means you get NHS care at least. That's paradise to an American.
The subject of History in British schools ought to be renamed "Propaganda of the Past." Of the defeats in South America in the Napoleonic period one knows nothing. The dreadful crimes committed in the empire-building period are never mentioned, after all, all the natives were glad to have us there and it was in their best interests! My birth certificate says that I am British, but now that the census forms back to 1811 have been declassified, and one can have one's DNA analyzed for one's racial past, I find - lo and behold! - I am by blood less than 10% British, and my allegiance by blood is to another racial group. And so - what does being British mean to me? Apart from my birth certificate, it appears I ain't!
Being British... Well I was born here, I have a British passport, my father was first born British of Irish father.. I could go on, as im into that stuff, but I know where my roots go back, but as I was born here, I guess in British.. Your ancestors moved about, did some crap stuff, but where your born is who you are..
Could we examine some of the cultural aspects that tend to go with being British? Behaviors? Attitudes? I don't mean stereotypes... English and Scottish stereotypes tend to be pretty silly, and in my experience pretty far off the mark.
I am a white British middle class male. Everybody hates me and I am culturally superfluous. But yeah, Having the NHS is great. I do believe we have some damn fine looking Women too.
The question at present is for how much longer we'll have the NHS as it exists now. Probably privatization is the goal of the present government. My view is that the country has been in a kind of social regress since the 1980's - but that's probably true of a lot of western countries.
