Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this walked the earth in flesh and blood. —Albert Einstein about Gandhi That says it all. Gandhi was so far ahead of his time, it's tragic. I haven't read all of Gandhi's work, but based on his autobiography "Experiments with Truth", I can tell you that he was not only disciplined, spiritual and progressive, he was also a man of deep feelings and complex emotions. What distinguishes him from the "mountaintop gurus" is that he was very active in society, setting up schools, sanitary reform, and of course political efforts. You know, it's possible to live like Gandhi and still keep your day job. Also, if any of you are interested in diet, I suggest you study him. You'll be surprised at what he ate. And what he didn't eat.
He believed in ahimsa which means "non-injury to all living things". For Hindus, this means plants, too. So Gandhi ate only the fruits of plants: oranges & dates mostly. He didn't even drink tea. My dad (who was lucky enough to see Gandhi once) said he was the healthiest looking human being on the planet.
wowo! anyone got any more info on this guy? i do have some quotes of his and know his life story...but i haven't read his books
"the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of human being" -mahatma gandhi i could agree more gandhi!
I've been to India and many people don't like Gandhi. They wish they had a Hitler instead. In fact he's not revered as father of the nation or a leading figure or factor in resistance against the british. Organized violence, mutinies in the armed forces and sponsorship by Hitler/Japanese for a seperate Indian army finally led to independance.
lol. I was following you for a while, but I'm afraid that statement lost you all credibility. You must be confusing "India" with "Indiana". K, I know there's an official site sponsored by the Gandhi foundation that has all his books online for the public. Damn I can't remember it at the mo. I'll warn you, though, Gandhi wasn't exactly a flamboyant writer. Most of his books are very dry. But you can find some real gems in his words.
Why loose credibility? Indians are becoming more and more patriotic and are fed up with secularism, affirmitive action, muslim demographics, UN, unreliable neighbours etc. They are fed up with idealism and want realistic policy to fend Hindu interests. You can laugh. People laughed at hitler before he came to power by the sentiments of the time.
Ghandi was born in Gujarat, India on October 2, 1869. He was educated in law at University College, London. In 1891, after having been admitted to the British bar, Gandhi returned to India and attempted to establish a law practice in Bombay, with little success. Two years later an Indian firm with interests in South Africa retained him as legal adviser in its office in Durban. When he arrived in Durban he found himself being treated as a member of an inferior race. He was disturbed at the widespread denial of civil liberties and political rights to Indian immigrants to South Africa.
