Frankly, not a whole lot. I've never been there, but all the dealings I've had with people and companies in FL has ended in my having to file false transactions reports with my bank and report scams to the police. I'm sure there are nice people there, I just haven't come across them.
I liked it back in 1960. It was so nice in Miami Beach when I was a kid. At age 6 I could walk down Lincoln Road myself or go to the beach alone and never got bothered. Now, I wouldn't move there if you paid me. I hear lots of people moving out due to politics and stupid laws from Gov.
I liked the weather, but when I was there from '78 to '84, the Mariel boat lift was happening ( Castro just about emptied his prisons--inmates were sent to Florida) ,dead Haitians were washing up on Roxanne Pulitzers beach ( and the beaches of other rich and famous people) and I met some of the craziest people I have ever met anywhere down there!!
Rodeo drive with those shiny red GMC's pick up trucks with a lot of bass playing, same in 2024 ? That's a place I remember from being about 13 and visiting in about 1986. I went to Daytona, nice beach and a big racetrack I think. Also Miami interesting architecture and massive beach with green rolling waves and a hot sea, yes the water felt actually hot. And Disney world. And a huge thunder storm with lightening bolts hitting the scrub land on the side of the road going back to the airport. I forgot the everglades, with those boats with a V8 and propellor on the back looking for gators. I just looked it up 30C or 86F peak temps that is HOT indeed.
When you live on land that is mostly swamp, or a piece of an island that is more likely than not to sink into the ocean with a large enough storm, I'd think the Insurances rates who be astronomical. Can you imagine the insurance rates on Key West?
Ridiculous. Farmers and State Farm as well as other major carriers left the entire state. Hurricane insurance and Flood insurance are separate. Citizens Insurance is pretty much it. $4,000 to $8 000 in homeowners insurance for a $300 000 home.
I'm sure these Homeowners don't stop to think, but in just over three years they will have paid the insurance company the total price of their house plus some and will still be paying only the interest on their house to the mortgage company. Ludicrous.
Tom Petty and Jimmy Buffet came from Florida, but they're both dead now, and I can't think of anything else I like. I grew up in tourist traps and, all I can say, is Hawaii is more exotic.
Like? About Florida??? What I did not like in Sarasota High School was having KKK Newsletters and flyers jammed into my locker during the day. Every day... I told my Grandfather, he had a fit. Next thing I knew I was being shipped back to cold snowy New England to be with my parents. Endless swamps, vast clouds of mosquitoes, rednecks everywhere, and ultra-conservative white people, you can have it!
