Recently I've discovered the awesomeness of hot water bottles. Fill it up with hot water, pop a woolly cover on it and sit underneath it with a blanket...better than any heater! What do you do to stay warm in the winter?
I Curl Up Next To A Big Hot Pussie...... Cheers Glen. PS:- I Almost Forgot To Say The Pussie Is A Big 8kg Cat Called Arnold......
I have these sacks full of beans that I put in he microwave for 1 minute. They stay warm for a few hours. A hot water bottle is better though. I need to get one of those in the winter. I also have these socks called t-max heat socks from marks work wearhouse. They are insanely thick and warm so if my feet get cold at night I wear those. Lots of sweaters too.
That's an interesting technique for staying warm! I usually stay warm by layering and where I live that is basically enough. But in colder climates I would probably be trying all sorts of stuff!
i dont do much the gas furnace keeps the place fairly warm...the woodstove also works great but too much sometimes due to less temp control on it no one around here has electric heat
There are lots of government programs in many places that can help you reduce your energy bill. Often they will give you a free energy audit, and will give you low-cost insulation, among other things. If you want an energy audit, now is a good time to get one (northern hemisphere), since demand goes up in the winter.
The only thing I do year around is to try to do laundry only on off peak hours. I keep the house at a comfortable temperature year around and I do not like a dark house so I light it the same way all the time. I cook all the time so the stove or oven is used when I do so. If I chose to I could probably reduce usage and costs but I also like our lifestyle so I do not think that I probably would do so.
I put plastic on the window frame from the inside and seal it around the window entirely. Sure, it sucks that I can't easily open the blinds, but doing every window in the house nearly cut our heating bill in half. Oddly, it doesn't do much for cooling in the summer. As if we made our home into a greenhouse. A water bottle is most excellent. I used to fill 2 and put them under the blanket at the foot of the bed till it was toasty. In the 18th and 19th century a pan with hot embers was used to warm a bed, but you have to move it around a lot or it torches the sheets. Water bottles don't!
I have gas heat but I guess the same question applies in regards to saving on my gas bill. I run an electric radiator heater to supplement the gas heat when I'm at home in the winter, they're extremely efficient and dont use much electricity. I usually keep the thermometer set around 67 and just dress warmly or use blankets if I get chilly. if you really want to get away from electric or gas heat all together I highly recommend installing a wood stove with an electric fan on it in your fireplace. We had one growing up and it warmed up the entire house.
If you're using a heater to warm your place hang washing on a clothes horse/airer it dries in a day and saves money on using a dryer.
I burn wood early morning for a hour starting at 5:30am, my dog has a bed full of blankets, and I burn wood when I get home. Seal big windows with plastic wrap, tape other windows outside that are weak. Keep as humidifier going 24/7 cause the wood burning kills the moisture. \ We do just fine.
If you don't have central heat, using box fans to circulate the heat, from heat sources, through the house works great in Winter. Did I use enough commas; or what?
My house is as energy efficient as it can be so the only alternative is to either move to warmer climes, or pay up. I like where I live so it’s bite the bullet and continue my support of OPEC Hotwater
I may get chilly sometimes in my house in winter but not in my own bed. And I don't even need an extra blanket or person for that! Definitely not a cat or dog as I would never allow them in my bed.
