I'm trying to think of something top protest about, I want something out of the ordinary and something local, something others could feel very strongly about if they were educated about, i'll consider all ideas thank you
Go to www.savedarfur.org Ignore the donation part, but that will give you an idea of the situation. Also look at other sites for some background info. To me, most other problems take a backseat to the very real situation that is going on in Darfur. You wanna protest something worthwhile? The website should give you a starting point. Write back and let me know what ya think.
Depends on you local community. Many times there are things local that you can make a difference with. In my little town the kids petitioned for three years to get a skateboard park. It's fanatastic and the work they put into gaining it was admirable. They not only petitioned the city and the county, but they held car washes, etc., to fund some of the construction cost. They did their research on insurance costs, proper construction and safety issues for the government agencies, and I think the movers and the shakers in the group gained a whole lot more than just a place to board.
thats so cool garderner. Soaringeagle I'm passionate about lots of things, like stopping poverty, saving the environment, helping animals, promoting tolerance to gay, lesbien and bi-sexual people and lots more, but i'm hoping to find something that will disgust and provoke action among my local community, if it involves them, they will do something about it. Time traveller, im looking and educating my self about Durfur.
Yes West Plains MO the youths forged together and forced the city to allow a skateboard park. They raised the money, got the land, dealt with the insurance ect and forced the city council to change thier stance or be sued, was so so awesome.
If your are for animals, your local shelter/pound could probably use you and your friends. Go take pictures of the animals, petition for better conditions, maybe a no kill status for your local shelter. They are usually less than well represented in the community. Tell the stories of individual cases, make your community aware of their conditions. I develop a lot of free sites on the web for shelters. But I don't really do a lot with my local shelter for reasons of my own. But you are young and haven't made political enemies there. Reach out...and those furry faces are something that can really sell your viewpoint. It's something that can really make a difference if all you do is get to gather a group of people your own age to go up periodically and take them for walks and socialize them. It's something, and somewhere that you can make a difference. Even getting donations of towels and bedding for your local shelter can make a difference. It's hard dealing with the pets that don't find homes though...takes a committment and a bit of distancing in some cases. Something to think about though.
There are some good things being put out here and all good things are worth pursuing. I would just like to ask if you are interested in pursuing a project or actively becoming involved in a protest? At 14 I would give that you are more than old enough to start in on influencing issues of socially redeeming importance, but there are varying forms of issues and types of involvement. In some countries, at 14 you are a member of an armed militia, while in others you are a major wage earner for the family, in others still you would be fighting dictatorial rule in your country, while in others still you are organizing bake sales to save animals (a point not meant to be anything other than a comparable reference). A protest, to me, is wholly different than a project. So my initial question I guess would be: are you looking for a project, or a protest?
If you truly believe in something then you should not be asking people what to protest about. Do not protest for the sake of protesting, that leads nowhere.
I mostly agree with BraveSirRubin, but if you are going to do it anyway, I suggest fighting for the rights of poor people and the lower class in general. Or better yet, protest to end class heirarchy all together.
I do feel strongly about lots of issues, but i'm looking for things who others also feel strongly about, like I said in my last message. I think I will find out about local shelters, it sounds good to me thank you
I feel very strongly about poor people's rights and alot of other people do as well. And it's a good issue to take up right now, especially with some American cities making it illegal to feed the homeless and things like that going on. Las Vegas and Miami have both passed feeding bans, although the last I heard, Las Vegas was being sued over theirs. The shelters are a good place to start, as they work with the homeless more than anyone else.
I haven't posted anything here at Hippyland since...way last April I believe. This is as good a place to restart as any. So I'll give you several important issues from the most broad to the most narrow. The most broad and as yet untouched issue you could take on as a matter of protest is merit. Yes merit. The wrong idea that anyone deserves any more or any less than anyone else. Merit is a falsehood. And it is a pernicious, virtually universal and totally institutionalized vehicle of bigotry. But this would require a certain amount of intellectual preparation before you (i.e. anyone) would be ready to handle the issue. On a more mundane but eminently important level you could and should certainly protest such foreign and domestic US policies as rendition, secret prisons, torture, illegal spying, suspension of habeus corpus etc. I mean for god's sake how bad do things have to get. Back in the 50s when I was a kid this was what they were telling us about Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union and dictatorships and why they were so bad. The fact that everyone has not been permanently out in the streets about these is sad testament to the possibly hopeless level to which this nation has sunk. Then there are the innumerable small specific issues. My pet peeves are drive-throughs (they waste millions of gallons of fuel, polluting the atmosphere and contributing to global warming, dependence on fossil fuel, obesity and vascular disease (in a society deficient in physical activity) and the people who let their engines (particularly diesels) continue to run when the vehicle is unattended or stationary for a certain period. Talk about stupid... And there's much, much more and it's all important as others responding to this thread have shared. So good luck and remember this is a universe based on cause and effect if you don't do anything then nothing will change. It feels good to again be doing my own part.
I forgot one of the most important things. Overpopulation. It is probably THE number one priority. It is killing the planet and killing us in multitudinous ways no pun intended. We need the world's population to start falling via birth control. We have met the enemy and it is we. (And that last sentence is gramatically correct weird as it sounds.)
I'm partial to protesting KFC. Check out KentuckyFriedCruelty.com Any animal rights protesting is kick ass. Who better to speak out for than those who can't speak! Circuses are also a big issue. Check out Circueses.com also check out PETA.com in general!
An example of a fifteen year old that had the courage to protest her convictions: http://www.progressive.org/mag_mc042406
the same thing happened in my town... except the town neglected to keep the park in good condition. and now it's unskateable, but this rich guy who's opening a factory in town said that since he's buying the land the park is on he'll rebuild it somewhere else but with concrete so it doesnt go to shit... hope it goes through
