Besides the big 3, does anyone know other cacti that contain a significant amount of mescaline or other psychedelic chemicals?

I thought the Opuntia's might have it, I just might have to do a little chemistry soon.

    cool.

use xylene for the defatting agent/solvent, it works best for that purpose.
muriatic acid and ammonia work well, as the acid and base

acetone should work fine; it's easily obtainable.

    understandable.

what you have to realize is that acetone evaporates, none of it will be left over when you dry your product completely. it's used to wash many different salts for purification, pulls out all the slightly polar impurities from your product (assuming you convert the mescaline freebase into an hcl salt).

if you've ever smelled cocaine, that distinctive smell is from the hcl salts being washed with acetone. pharm companies also use acetone to wash their products.
