Do you realize we've got the least amount of posts in the Hip Arts and Culture forum? The biggest by far is Love and Sex (obvious reasons, lot of stiffies out there) and even Body Modification ranks higher. Why do you think that is?

People don't think knowing how to write is important anymore.

Isn't it strange though, that most people are not word-shy to write anywhere else, but they're reluctant to write in a forum designated for their free expression where every topic under the sun can be combined?

You're right Keramptha. I wish more people would have faith on their creativity. Look at the poetry forum, for example. It's impossible to keep up. If people jotted a little bit of a story every now and again, in the end they would have something a lot more meaningful.

More people have piercings or tattoos than write, many more people have sex than write. [shrug]

To be fair, I went back to the index page and had another look and it appears that, at least for the time being, there are more threads(as opposed to posts) in here than a couple of other forums, but that's probably because they were set up more recently.

Also, the content of the average post here consists of more content. If we were to do a word count, you would probably find that this forum is top of the league. If you take mine and Keramptha's stories alone it probably covers half the arts forum. I often wondered how some people have clocked up 23,467 posts under their name, but then if you examine their posts it's easy to see how:

    example 1: yes.

example 2: lol. That was good.

example 3: (a name of an actor, film, or book on any thread about a theme of a tireless list that could have been compiled in 0.000000003 seconds by Google).

Nothing wrong with that. Others write many little posts and others have fewer, but very big posts. Anyway, it's not the size that matters, but at least, if you like 'em big, this is the place to be.

Is this the time to suggest size doesn't matter? Or am i drifting towards that other popular forum topic? ;)

i notice that people seem to have less faith in their writing than in art... here is my guess...words are very limited, and you need a vocabulary to get across what you want to say without repeating yourself...with art...It never really looks the way you saw it in your head..and you learn to deal with thaT. with words.. you can just say...and describe...Maybe thats more intimidating if you share it with someon else..theyre actually going to understand.. and 'see' your inner thoughts.....just an idea.. i dont know..

another thing is that words are really powerful....i mean arts powerful but words can effect someone s mind more, presicely and directly with specific intention.... sometimes i dont want to write becuase its too powerful a tool, we place too much faith in words....we belive them, and have o pay close attentio n when we read them. we have to follow the thought process of another person..and esentially 'give in' to that..and maybe we dont feel ready to give away our thoughts to anyone...or we dont feel redy to yet...

words can hold a lot or a litlle meaning....someomn says 'yes' they might be thinkin, not in a million years of hell...to face, read, and try to understand words...to try and write them coherently can cause our minds great offence sometimes...who am i to say this?, who is she to write this?... does any of it make sense?, will anybody understand?, what do these words contain and intend?

***i cant explain any of this, ecept that i guess these are some of the fears presented by reading and writing..and why we dont do more of it.

words just seem very ordered....directional and like they are a statement of some opinionated desicion/whether thats a descison on perspective, fact, or events.....that can be scary, i find it scary. who do you trust when it comes to words? they're difficult to 'listen to'

veinglory, you're right. It's the content that matters not the size of it, in which case the number of posts next to a person's name is insignificant. Why is it there anyway?

Keramptha, you've knocked the nail on the head with your statement. Writers tend to put their psyche on the line when they write, they become 'open books' that reveal their inner thoughts and inhibitions. But, that can also be said for any forum, because the minute someone puts up a post, they are in effect revealing part of their persona, whether they like to, or not.

Anyway, I realize that it's hardly an earth shattering debate. After all, there are specific forums dedicated to writers, some of which we've seen advertised here, too. I was, however, concerned about the sliding figures and the overall percentage. With growing concern in Wall Street and Tokyo, we might have to face cutbacks and streamline the forum. Nobody likes downsizing, but we're facing an economic crisis of posts and lack of verbal investment. So we may have to get rid of some of the 'post icons' to make room for capital growth.

I would suggest the floppy disk, the computer monitor and the TVset to be the first to go, since hardly anyone ever uses them anyhow. I know it's a difficult choice, but difficult times require difficult decisions and at the end of the day we have to think of the future.

On that very note... I've just put some 'sketches' in the art forum, but I intend them to be part of a novel. After receiving some great advice on structure, I decided to sketch some characters and then do some short biogs on them to maintain their continuity. I've since adjusted the plot to include the actual sketches (a la 'Alice in wonderland'?) and probably some more... I found that I enjoyed the hands-on art side of things, and it gave me many new perspectives on the actual writing. Indeed, i've had to re-write the first 4 chapters many times since first wrestling with the graphite!!
