My brother and I decided to go barefoot to school today, we got a lot of strange looks and comments but we laughed it off...

I'm suprised and administrator didn't see me. Incase they do next time, what's some things I can see in return if I get a referal?

    :)

just tell them the shoes you were wearing broke, and you dont have any extras (if they yell at you). and if they ask to see your shoes, then say that you threw them out ;-)
i go to school barefoot pretty much every day, its not a big deal about the teachers where i live. maybe in tennessee its different though, man :)

If the administrator is a problem, just get some cheap thong type sandals from wal mart or somewhere... easy on, easy off.

If the administartor/principal gives you shit about it, ask to see the school's dress code. Most schools' dress codes don't say anything specifically about shoes. Since there are no health code regulations requiring shoes, they shouldn't be able to do a damn thing about it. I was lucky in high school, I went to a private arts high school where practically everyone went barefoot.

People do not have an "equal right to education" if they transgress against official rules of the institution. It's very possible that there is no rule against bare feet, but the problem is, administrators have the trump card of "insubordination." They can claim that virtually ANYTHING is "insubordination" (i.e. disobedience to authority) and bag you for that.

It's not likely that a claim of, "My family can't afford shoes," will fly any further than a lead frisbee. You're wearing clothes, aren't you? Were they free? Could buy $30 jeans but not $4 sandals or $10 sneakers? LYING IS NOT THE WAY TO GO, HERE. Neither is saying your shoes broke! How many times will that excuse work? ONE, if you're lucky.

Appealing to the intellect and ego of a school administrator is probably the only hope. Inform them that you have researched the fact that there is no "health code" or "state law" requiring the public to wear shoes anywhere, and that there is even an information clearinghouse online called the Society for Barefoot Living (www.barefooters.org) that has delved deep into research on this subject. Politely challenge the notion that there is a rule against barefooting, and tell the administrator that against your wishes, you will wear sandals for one week while he looks into the matter and attempts to find the imaginary law or health code he thinks governs your attire. Tell him that if, after a week, no such law has turned up, you will expect to not be hassled for your free choice to not wear shoes on your feet. :)

I watched a guy complete an Ironman Triathlon barefoot. When reporters asked him how he could do it, he just said he never wears shoes, so he didnt really think about it.

    thanks everybody :)

EDIT: I just looked up my school dresscode to be sure... and I got this:

    Shoes
Appropriate shoes must be worn at all times
Examples of appropriate shoes: tennis shoes, or any of the euro-comfort shoes (such as Birkenstocks, Clarks, Born, etc.)
Sandals, flip-flops, or open-toed shoes are not acceptable

Does that first comment say (in other words) that shoes must be worn at all times? If so I say that it's quite misleading....

screw it, just go barefoot. don't let the system bring you down, man. it's not like theyre going to throw you in jail...
"i killed a guy's mother. what are you in for?"
    "...i wouldn't wear shoes in school. yeah, that's right. i'm a hardass."

they probably won't even notice. teachers have better things to do than looking at students' feet...i hope so, anyway...

Id just say my parents pay your taxes so you oughta just be glad im here so you get paid for my ass being in class everyday. They DO have more important things to do than bitch at some kid just cuz they dont have shoes on, at least theyre at school and getting an education instead of being out on the street in a gang or on drugs or something like that. Id take a barefoot kid in class over that any day.

Why should a school care what you wear as long as youre getting educated? If people are distracted by it then thats their own problem, if kids cant keep from getting distracted so easily then they shouldnt be there anyways because there are alot more distracting things in the world than someone's bare foot, besides if it was commonplace then noone would bat an eye.

hmmm yes i agree with that completely. that is why i do what i want no matter how many times i get in trouble for it. if they want me to put on shoes, its not like they are going to force them on my feet because if they did it would be really easy just to lift your other foot and break their jaw into 4 peices. so all im saying is if you want to go barefoot at school, no one is going to stop you. yay for barefeet!

I disagree. I think this approach would be counterproductive. What does it gain if you get people thinking, "Hey, yeah, anyone who likes feet in any way is a 'freak,' 'the enemy.' What kind of weirdo bad person would like feet?"

That's not fair, and it's not accurate. I'm the kind of "freak" who likes to see people's feet. And there's no more wrong with that than there is with liking to be barefoot.

What you're advising is that we throw our "friends" to the wolves in order that we don't become the meal. Not a good idea. It's kind of like saying nothing while the Nazis came for the Jews, Gypsys, homosexuals, trade unionists... and then when you need someone to speak up for you, no one's left... :(
You don't try to defend yourself by putting others' heads on the chopping block, or by implying that what you do is not so bad because what others do is worse...

Um, is there a point to you opting not to wear deodorant?

How is your hygiene in general? Do you at least bathe every day before school?

Maybe they're being rude because you have earned yourself a reputation for being "different" to the point of being offensive? Nothing will get people against you in a school setting faster than pushing your insistence on being different too far -- especially if they can add to your problems the fact that you smell unpleasant.

You might want to reconsider allowing yourself to smell like B.O...

hey flowerchild89...how did you get away with going barefoot the whole year?

My school rule book always said "shoes must be worn at all times" Of course there were times when you didn't, like gymnastics or dance or something. But no one could have actually gone to school barefoot.

Did you go barefoot to school in the snow?
Did you ride a school bus or walk?
Are you the only girl who goes barefoot at your school?

Man I wish I could see that...that's so cool.

I really think schools if they wanna have kids comin there to get educated and dont want someone putting up a big stink about their rules youd think theyd just let you go barefoot and not worry about it. it doesnt hurt anyone and bare feet rarely distract anyone, at least not when it matters weither theyre distracted or not. Schools need to stop being so uptight and just live and let live and just do their jobs and concentrate on actually educating kids. Schools spend so much time with useless crap these days im surprised any kids learn anything there.
