does anyone think website design would be a good career to get into? I'm in school right now taking the courses, and all of a sudden I'm getting my doubts about it. I'm just not sure if I'll beable to get a job after I graduate. Also, does anyone have any suggestions of languages or programs I should learn? I've taken xhtml, advanced javascript, flash, photoshop, advanced graphic design, dreamweaver, dhtml. I plan on learning PHP and Actionscript after I graduate.
Well, I own a Web Design Company, Joken Design, and I can say, it really depends on if you have a degree, a lot of skill all ready, or if you can do graphics as well? Not a lot of company are hiring, especially for people with out degree or previous training. It isn't a easy career, and there can be low times. And if you want to do page design only you need to be a graphic designer. Otherwise I would recommend: PHP & MySQL, Ruby, Rails, JavaScript, XML, SOAP, AJAX, and a lot of Unix server admining. I wouldn't hire someone unless they were advanced in PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, XHTML, CSS, and knew how to make design's cross browser compliant. If you have any more questions feel free to pm me.
Thanks for the posts! I want to design websites, but I wish to code them also. Im pretty good with xhtml and css. I'm still working on figuring out the incompatibility issues between broswers. And my javascript could use some work still. Do you use alot of flash Xora? Thanks for the offer of messaging you. I'm sure I will be doing that soon enough. I do enjoy it. Its not my ideal job, but I can't stand doing what I was doing before.
I have worked with flash a lot, however I personally, usually deal more in heavy coding for Web Apps. I spend a lot of my time writing PHP & MySQL, and Ruby on Rails.
If things get too much worse, I don't think I'll be building websites ...... but people still won't know what to do when their desktop suddenly turns upside down A wise man once said; "Those who know survive recession"
you need to learn ajax and css since that is what is driving alot of the newer fancier websites with better flexibility.
i wouldn't recommend it, you could find a job, but it would be hard because that industry has been outsourced ALOT these last couple of years for the simple reason that a guy in india who is way smarter than you is willing to do it for way less than you. on the other hand im sure theres alot of american companies like Xora said but i would imagine finding a job in the field would be hard nowadays.
