That obligates us to follow and acknowledge them. Why?

Leaders need people to conform to religions and traditions to control them easier. Same reason the Roman emperor Theodosius I made Christianity the official religion of the empire. Monotheism is easier to control and enforce than a polytheistic religions. Less internal strife and resistance.

Also there is something in humans which yearns for a collar around the neck.

. But most all the holidays are not as advertised. Jesus wasn't born on December 25th and never celebrated his own birthday. Thanksgiving is the biggest lie there ever was besides 911. And this is not conspiracy, this is all truth. The commercial aspects are obvious..

Well, Jesus isn't the son of God either. So that blows lots of holidays out of the water. :D

It doesn't need to be "real", people enjoy keep record/track of calendar dates. It gives them something to look forward to, and false sense of control.

I could do without Thanksgiving.....no fun for me cleaning the entire house with a tooth brush for weeks....buying all of the grceries and slaving away in the kitchen every year.....
I am not fond of the next month for that reason...although I do enjoy the company when it is here......and I can relax for a minute and enjoy them.

Mainstream Jesus was just some guy who was in the right place at the right time to fulfill the age old Jewish prophecy of the "Messiah". There were many Jesuses alive at the time mainstream Jesus was alive who were also claiming to be Christ(the anointed one). Mainstream Jesus died. He wasn't supposed to die. He was suppose to fight and bring the Jews to power and glory over their oppressors according to their legend. There were other Jesuses, more believable ones, who actually fit the description of the prophesy. But this one made it to stardom because the Romans needed a new religion to keep their empire in order. Warrior Jesus would have never made the cut as the official religion of Rome. They needed Peaceful/universal love Jesus, otherwise what the hell are the roman leaders going to do with a god who only protects the Jews?

you don't often hear people celebrating xmas by mentioning jesus.....most just think of the holiday season as a time for families to enjoy each others company after a busy year apart....

thanksgiving is the same...no one gives a shit about some stupid story about Indians and pilgrims....it has blossomed into a time for celebrating harvest and the arrival of fall ...

my family is huge...very hard to have gatherings....knowing to schedule things in advance helps us stay a close knit and loving family.......

    take on Columbus day instead.....

i don't think it obligates us to anything, nor are they universal.

people feel obligated by their emotional dependence upon human contact.

not that there's anything wrong with this, just that there's not anything wrong with it not being universal either.

there is no normal. some of us are less emotionally dependent on this then others,

which is still well within the range of healthy variation.

or i guess you could say i relate better to cats then dogs or humans.

So not everyone likes tradition, that's cool!

But most people continue the tradition because of memories made around these traditions, and memories can be passed on this way!

I remember the last, first, the worst Christmas..
I will be changing Christmas this year, but only because times are changing, for me at least!

But no one need follow tradition, it's purely because you love the memory, and shouldn't be for anything else!

Or why would America celebrate thanks giving right ahead of Christmas?
