AHH okay Wax is bad BECAUSE it is hard to remove,
hence, making a better home for residue, THEREFORE, making a better home for mold and other such things you do not want in clumped hair like dreads.
sure wax does help to smooth out your dreads, and may make them look neater,
    but again,
it is a real task to get the wax out.

One way to get wax out is to buy a hard (bar) soap that contains non-residue ingredients (go to the pharmacy or store, tell them you need a soap that will remove oils and residue),
and rub at each individual dread with the soap , then rinse your hair with apple cider vinagre, tea tree oil, baking soda and salt (salt helps a buttload for tightening, prefereably sea salt),and maybe some lemon juice for either lightening of the color or a less stronger of a scent.
once you've rinsed, Was your hair out with hot water (as hot as you can handle it), untill you no longer see sludge coming out of your hair..

This is kind of embarrassing thing for meto bring up but I figure I'd share my story for anyone else out there who could use it, since my problem has been solved since my last check.

I recently had a residue scare because of my knotty boy dreadwax.. I had only used it for a few monthes before I started to notice a strange gummy-like feeling in my hair where my dread had grown out since I've used wax.. I washed my hair with really hot water and began to check my hair once again by diggin to the middle of my dread, and found a fingertip full of wax. It was unpleasant, but I'm glad I have figured out what it had been.

Lesson is, if you are going to use wax, use it with moderation, because it may help for smoothing out your dreads, but the possibility of mold and residue as far too large to take a chance in using it regularily. The best way I've found that has smoothed my dreadlocks out significantly, is palmrolling my hair while it's still wet from washing, and twisting and separating it when in the shower. another peice of advice,
be patient. Rome wasn't built in one day. love your hair, and it will love you.

    ALSO:
If for any reason you are concerned, have a friend you trust who knows what to look for take a long deep and thorough check your hair regularily. because all hair is different and oil production is different, it's better to be safe than sorry. The only way (that I know of anyways) to get rid of mold in dreads, is to take a pair of scissors, and lop em' off.
