ive had my dreads for..lemme see like a week and 2 days now, im actually pretty happy with the progress, buuuuut my head is soooo itchy and alls i wanna do is scrub the crap outta my scalp, oh yea, just thinking about it..... anyways, is it too soon to wash em, should i wait, can i do it? i have a dread shampoo bar that i used before i actually had the dreads to prepare the hair, any tips, ive kept them dry since ive had them, umm what else, oh any advice on how to lock up my rooties a little faster? cuz they're being stubborn
Hair is hair. Washing it at any phase of lock dvelopment will not hurt it. In fact oily and dirty hair does not knot up well....so if your head is telling you to wash...then do it. Your roots will not knot for awhile just do like paul mccartney and let it be. =]
oh ha ha very funny, I'm a noob not an idiot, lol, but thanks for the advice. I have friends with dreads but they went for the au naturale rip and tear method, such is good but not for me. They'res are alittle more funky and all over the place. That and they smell weird. So I'm not taking their advice ha ha
What was their advice, mold=good? Just whenever your head feels like it needs washing, it needs washing, it won't hurt a thing, might make some "manufactured" locks fall out, but if it does, they where doomed anyway, when you "make" locks, some just won't jibe with how your particular hair knots, and will have to fall out before locking back up more naturally. Washing can help kickstart some knots, or greatly accelerate baby knots, as well. What kind of shampoo did you get? I'd strongly suggest dr. bronners magic soap, used it before dreading, and finding out I could just start using it on my hair and neglect is really the reason I started dreading. Great stuff, great company behavior/track record, enjoyably psychotic labels, healthy to be around, etc. It also changes the texture of your hair, it's pretty much an anti-conditioner, especially right after you switch to using it.
the only thing you may want to remember with washing (depending on how long your hair is) is that as you locks mature it will take them a really long time to dry, even with a blowdryer. so, you may want to work your washing routine to your conveniece. for instance, before locks i shampooed/conditioned/blowdried/straightened every single day. i started washing every other day and then less and less. I only shampoo once a week now. It's niiiiice. and you don't have to use a shampoo or soap made especially for locks, but i would highly recommend non-residue. or even baking soda and vinegar rinses.
i know, its gross, but i washed 'em last night and oh it felt so gooooood and this is actually the best they've looked so far. im quite happy
just got out of the shower after washing mine too I try to fit my washing schedule in with my university timetable and the sun in my backyard. So good to wash them then go sit in the sun, relax and let them dry.
Hey, I read that you can wash your hair with apple cider vinegar. I'm back combing this weekend so I tried it out. It's been 3 days and my hair is uber greasy. Any advice?
Yeah, vinegar doesn't seem to do anything about grease, just sort of moves it around. It's good to use vinegar and baking soda in the same session though, I personally tend to do vinegar first, I know most people rinse with it, but it seems to just lift more grease off my scalp and move it all around in my dreads.
