a book length interview with andy kaufman. read it for my contemporary fiction class. we also watched different andy kaufman scenes on youtube. the ups and the downs and the hits and the misses. it was much more interesting to see them after reading the book. julie hecht is trying to find out who the real andy kaufman is, spending a year trying to pursue a two-hour interview with andy. a whole bunch of crazy things ensue and andy always explains that he doesn't do comedy, he doesn't know what makes people laughs, he just does what he thinks is nice, like reading the great gatsby, and especially singing, as he referred to himself as a "song and dance man." anyways, andy kaufman is very obviously andy kaufman, as he will forever and always be, but it's also through julie hecht's eyes, which affects (obviously) the way the story, or "interview" unfolds. it's a really quick read, and if you like andy kaufman, you're curious, you don't care at all, you could probably read it in one good sitting. plus, it just being, essentially, a whole dialogue, it's very easy to read.
