Just from a strictly Christian perspective -

Things like 1 John 3 have been radically misconstrued and are actually about Jesus preaching to the souls in Abrahams Bosom, before he "led captivity captive" and broke the bonds of death. We see with the parable of Lazarus at the Gate these two different places. Anywho

If we just go according to the Old and New Testaments - they were the result of a War in Heaven, where one third of the angels who were already predisposed to be wicked were cast down with their general, Lucifer, to earth.

Revelation 12:7-10 [7]And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, [8]And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. [9]And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. [10]And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

Some will say that this happens concurrently with events in the End Times - but Jesus mentions it here as something that happened prior to ~32 AD

Luke 10:18-19 [18]And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. [19]Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

This is why we see him called "god of this world" - because specifically this is his domain until final judgment, not because he is actually "God" as some would say. He was only known as "Light Bearer" before he fell. Not after. Anywho.

2 Corinthians 4:4 [4]In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

So he hasn't actually been to Hell yet, but is trapped here. Hell never had anything to do with him, but just as a holding place for the damned until final judgment when they're all thrown into the Lake of Fire along with Satan, the False Prophet and Antichrist

Revelation 20:10 [10]And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Before then, he will be bound for one thousand years during the Millennial Reign in a bottomless pit

Revelation 20:1-2,10 [1]And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. [2]And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, [10]And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

With that cleared up, the War in Heaven itself likely happened somewhere near the end of chronological events in the Old Testament, because while there are mentions of evil there, the only mentions we find of "evil spirits" are those that are actually still answerable to God during that time.

1 Samuel 16:14 [14]But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

1 Samuel 18:10 [10]And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul's hand.

We see here a spirit that was "evil" but still a part of the heavenly army.

Azazeal, the scapegoat of Leviticus, is not actually mentioned as a literal demon, although that context is popularly misconstrued as such.

There are also no accounts of demons being cast out during Old Testament times - because they hadn't yet fallen and were still in Heaven.

So the most likely chronology would be that the War in Heaven occurred during the "400 Year Silence" between Malachi and Matthew, at which point Lucifer and one third of angels kicked out and were given this Earth as their domain.

He will be bound during the Millennial Reign, and his forces here will exist but with leadership, at which point there will be a final battle and they will all finally go to Hell with the damned to be tormented there.

Edit: also, the reason for the War in Heaven - Satan and his lackeys didn't like God's "Project: Humanity" because we were made in God's image and were getting way too much attention. That's where the "accuser of the brethren" thing comes in.
