    First read this story:

The question I have for you all is this: Why DON'T we want God with this kind of desperate need? Why ISN'T this the most driving force in our lives? If anything deserves to be, this is it, no?

I dunno, what is there to "want" when you want a god? How, when you dont even know what god is, do you know if you are wanting it? I wouldn't know what god to want even if I did decide I needed a little god in my life, cause what the hell is god? Should we go by ancient definitions or modern ones? Christian or Pagan? Naturalistic or Humanistic? Monothesitic or Polytheistic?

If there really was a god or gods who created us with the intention for us to want them as much as we want air in our lungs, why the hide and seek game? Why the oversaturated god market? Based on human religious history I see no evidence of any ultimate power that we are all supposed to be focused on, but more of a hodge-podge of explanations for the unanswerable of the times mixed with social expression of the culture and morality of the times.

People don't want god, people need religion and that's where the gods come from.

That is a great story and this is a great question. I think for the most part life drags us down too much to solely desire G-d. There are times, for all of us, I think, that the only thing we want is G-d. But somehow the mundaneness of life come back to haunt us and we are left just wanting...air, or money, or companionship, or something else.

I guess one thing we could try is to take time out of our day, everyday, and contemplate how everything is from G-d and how everything we want for ourselves G-d can give us and how wanting anything except G-d is selling ourselves short.

    Why don't we want God?

    There is no need.

But the question is why do we even have to TRY to make time for God. Why isn't it like breathing, or eating. Something we want to, need to, satisfy?

If food and air and water are required nourishment for the body
Is not God nourishment to our souls?
Why is that requirement much looser?

And if there is some urge and need to satisfy, why do we always seem to do it wrong, with money and other diversions that never satisfy?

The coarseness of the body. The body conceals the soul. Bodily needs are easily felt. Needs of the soul have to be brought out through contemplation. If we were created differently, serving G-d would be simple.

But as it stands, in order to be in touch with our soul, we need to actively bring into our minds that we have a soul. The soul is not felt. It is something a person can only discover on their own and can never prove they have.

Furthermore, the more time we spend gratifying the needs of our body, the coarser the body becomes and the more it becomes an obstacle to feel the soul. The body and soul have an amazing interrealationship. The more you focus on one, the smaller the other becomes. That's why fasting is part of most religions. By ignoring the needs of the body, we bring out the soul.

And that's why people who spend their lives living for the needs of their body have a hard time finding spirituality. They are diminishing their soul by ignoring its needs.

    Great questions....

    Why would there be?

Knowing that spectral light oscillates at a frequency of 400 Petahertz to 800 petzhertz, doesn't make light any less interesting.

Similarly, not believing in a God doesn't make the sunset any less beautiful.

The world is the way it is. This cannot be denied. Whether or not there is a God, there is no need for one.

If one is ever needed ...
We can fulfill that need ourselves. :sunglasse

well what i don't understand is why we should be expected to. i wasn't born with any such.

if someone else was then the'll just have to speak for themselves because i can't even immagine such a thing.

i've encountered the nontangable. to me it does not resemble what anyone claims to believe about it other then appearently wishing us well.

there is i guess a sense of love and a feeling of connectedness, but not this kind of burning need that priesthoods and similar intrests attempt to instill, generaly with the appearent intention of being able to exploit it.

I had a thought last night while laying on my lawn looking at the stars... perhaps we don't feel a driving need because we aren't away from God like the man with his head underwater is away from air. I think that might have been the whole point of the story I posted: God is like the air, and we are always breathing It in. We aren't all drowning underwater but are thoughtlessly already connected with God. The point is that we aren't CONSCIOUS of it.

    Just some thoughts, anyways.

I think this is a little off. People can be down here for years and remain very distant from G-d. To have a relationship ie., to be close to G-d requires contemplation and work. You aren't close just because you're a human.

I didn't mean physically close. I mean have a close relationship. That takes work.

right, but if god is everywhere, he is in us, around us, is us. We can be unaware of it and feel very far from god, but never are in reality.

That would not be freedom, nor would it be life. However the search for answers somtimes makes people want God more and more

You're right. The thing about being conscious is important. Most of us don't realize that we are surrounded by God: human beings, nature, animals, rocks, mountains, water, air, earth...all the things!!! God's Great Spirit is everywhere in everything. Once we know it...then we are closer to God, and if you happen to like spirituality and mysticism, even more :)
