Has anyone read it? It is an amazing book about a guy in the 70's, Peter Jenkins, who decides to walk across America and does, from NY to AL. True story
dude thats such a fucking amazing book i read it in one day, laying on a friends couch.. i got so lost in it, the part with his dog was really sad, i definitely want to read it again
I read it, Walk west and one of his more recent ones about sailing along the florida coast. Perk Vickers of the Vickers Ranch is still alive. I catch myself wondering about some of the folks he and later, Barbara, met. I was very interested in his take on the Farm. I wonder how much of it was colored by Coop's death. Now, Stephen is a power junkie, but look what he and his people pulled off!
I think his take on the farm gave a realistic description of what the Hippie lifestlye demands. Those people worked 16 hour days during the summer in the fields, and they eventually became dependant on tractors; it was not easy, but they did pull it off sans any interaction with coporations. The book is so inspiring because he did the unthinkable: walking across the country, with only a talk dog at his side.
That book was fucking great. It was actually recomended to me by someone on this website when I mentioned my own desire to traverse this continent. Shit, what else is there to do, right?
Walk Across America is AWESOME!!!! Check out his other books. The Walk West. Across China,Close Friends,The Road Unseen and the one about his sailing adventure.
I have not read any of his other books even though I have a couple of them. It lost its spirit after Coop died and he got married. I have read about his life, and I guess his compulsive traveling severed his marriage to Barbarra, who he meets in the first book. So what does he do? He sails along the Florida coast and writes a book about it.
Thanks for the recommendation, it sounds exactly like the kind of book I would enjoy. I can't wait to travel in the USA
