Never been here before. Out and about last night, some freak, even older than me, offered to sell me a bag of weed. Damn, bags have changed. I could barely see the weed and I had my glasses on. ha ha Do we give off an old hippy vibe? Off to see the haight area today. Gotta get my picture taken at the west cost crossroads.
During my last visit to San Francisco, I spotted about the only empty parking spot along Haight on a busy afternoon and the cross street was Ashbury. They had a Gap there at the time.
I hope to visit San Francisco in the near future. It's the first place I want to go as soon as I can afford it! Are there still any hippie places...leftover?
first time i'd been to the sf bay area; the key system articulateds were still running accross the lower deck of the bay bridge, but i never got to ride them because my dad's pass was good on the ferrey boats. i was of the era but basically missed the scene because i grew up in the northern sierras. was only in the late 70s that had any real connection, and by then i was almost 30 and the scene had moved to oregon and was mostly about environment. i was in the air force to avoid being drafted into the army during viet nam.
so anyway, growing up in colfax, my dad and i, my mom didn't like to take long trips with us for some reason, we'd ride the train for free on his pass, so while i did see parts of the city, never really saw any connection with 'the scene'. other parts of the city (sf) contemporary with it, but never the scene itself. i did come in contact with berkely, briefly, many years later, though also in kind of an almost unrelated context. littlerally having been to the city of san francisco, though, yes, many times in the 50s and 60s. union square, carol dota's topless shoe shine booth, near the opera house, i remember that, and around the induction center in oakland there were people selling the barb and frek brothers commics and things like that.
Yeah. I was the last hippie to leave San Francisco, back in 1997 or 8. The old hippie expression, "Will the last person to leave the party, turn off the lights." I was the one who turned out the lights. Nothing but rich yuppies. No parties. no fun people. All gone long ago. Very sad.
