let's talk about simulation and reality. the 3d and hd and video games i had growing up had me thinking over the years.

here are some thoughts/questions to spark:
    - what is real? virtual? - philosophical discussion maybe for another day but it's out there for those who also see the opportunity to define
    - how do experiences with the virtual affect our experiences with the non-virtual?
    - how much time do we/you spend with simulations?
    - what is the value of these simulations, personally, to society, etc...?

comment on anything, i'm interested in your thoughts

    some of my thoughts..
i can appreciate the aesthetic and skill in creating lifelike imagery but i also see distraction, distortion, programming, etc under the surface of these amazing graphics we have. i grew up on snes and toy story but i don't defend these technologies... one of my concerns is for children growing up in environments that are heavily saturated with pixel perfect creations and with parents who are blind to the natural perfection of the ground beneath them.

I believe that virtual reality development should be the top priority of all who have the means to do so, because I truly think it's the last hope for humanity. If VR becomes advanced enough for all five senses to be utilized, then we might finally have the means to bring about a permanent peace for all people throughout the world. There would literally be a world for every individual. Since every person would essentially have the means to have whatever they want, economics and politics as we know them would disappear. We would still need food, water, electricity, clothing, and medical distribution in the real world, as well as law enforcement and waste removal. But the concept of "cost" would become redundant, at least until the world's resources became in danger of being depleted. However, by that time we may have the ability to replenish and restore our planet, since mass education through virtual experience would surely advance our species beyond what we now think is possible.

Whew! That was quite a spiel, but I think about this each and every day, and I truly believe in it. I can't do otherwise, because I don't see a better path humanity could possibly choose. I know it might sound weird, scary, and dramatic. I've been hesitant to express these beliefs to others for years now. But I can't be silent anymore. I'm not going to sit and watch people slowly destroying my planet and eachother with their backwards thinking if I think there's a better way that should be shared.

i don't think its a bad thing to be able to realisticly simulate anything and everything we are capable of immagining, but at the same time, there is too much disconect from certain very pertinanent details of reality. (where the air we breathe COMES FROM for example, that it isn't 'just there') simulation is not, of course, the premary cause of this disconnect. it existed long before even the earliest exploration of 3d simulation began. cultural and economic factors play the major roll.

People already spend so much time in front of their T.V.'s and computers(myself included)that if virtual reality becomes so good(real),how many people would just stay in that virtual world and stop going to work, caring for themselves and their loved ones etc, etc. It could cause humanity to take a step backwards into a dark ages of sorts.

My husband plays 3-D immersive, massive multi-player games. Right now he's maxed out on rankings in the Lord of the Rings game. Still loves it. Seems to keep him young and spry, with good hand/eye coordination. He will be celebrating his 61st birthday in under 2 months.

i have ranted ad infinitum/ad nauseum about how the 3D immersive experiences i had with Salvia Divinorum and N,N, DMT healed my soul and cured my addictions.

i'm in favor of these alternate realities, though i worry that too many may fall into the delusion of saying that our consensual reality is itself a simulation. Thank you The Matrix.
