Star Citizen is a major 145 million dollar, crowd funded, video game in development which, supposedly, will be released in the near future. Vulcan is the newest Linux video game api (application program interface) that developers have been raving about and gamers have been wondering if it spells the end of Microsoft's domination of the video game market with their own api, Directx. The only advantage Microsoft has had when it comes to their Directx, is that they have been able to provide game developers with the latest bells and whistles and the tools to use them as video games have rapidly evolved over the last twenty years, however, video game graphics cards, software, and the entire rasterization process are finally maturing and unless Microsoft can produce entirely new and compelling bells and whistles that nobody else can there's no reason for developers to use their Directx and every reason to abandon them like yesterday's news for their tendency to monopolize markets.

Of course, Microsoft's specialty is providing interfaces and they are diligently working on their "Hololens" technology as a way to continue to dominate the market, but that's a shot in the dark if you ask me with all the competition in VR these days. Not least of which, is the popular video game distributor, Steam, porting their system to Linux and the Linux Kronos group releasing an open source 3D content streaming standard that the industry as a whole appears ready to adopt as the defacto standard. Other major video game developers are voicing the same complaints that Microsoft is attempting to monopolize the industry more aggressively than ever before with Windows 10 and we'll just have to wait and see where all this contention is leading, however, the list of reasons to ditch Microsoft altogether has just kept growing in recent years, while Linux is becoming more popular than ever.

Just as Microsoft made their fortune catering to the business community, Linux is now making strides in providing what the business community and gamers need and there can be no doubt that Microsoft knows their days of monopolizing desktops are numbered and they have already switched their focus to developing AI. Amazon and others are also moving into the video game market and, for once, the underdog may come out smelling like a rose thanks to the big dogs fighting it out amongst themselves so much that video game developers take their business elsewhere.

Star citizen looks like my kind of game. Too bad it will only be on PC. Well i do need a new pc, but i will probably not invest in the hardware requirements this game needs to work properly.

Its definitely a PC game that pushes the limits of modern technology requiring an i5 1700 or better, 8gb of ram, and 4gb of vram. For a gaming computer the first two are pretty standard, but a minimum of 4gb of vram is practically unheard of and, I believe, is indicative of things to come. Video gamers and developers complained for a long time that what they required was a faster quad core cpu and, in recent years, intel has provided them at reasonable prices. Next on the agenda is providing a gpu and memory that can support all that extra eye candy and the computers coming out later this year should be able to provide them at significantly reduced prices. Of course, after that comes the race to produce a cheap 27" or better fast high resolution display. There's no reason whatsoever that you shouldn't be able to buy a setup like that for roughly the same price as a console.

I guess you're right. It's a personal reason: i already bought a console and don't want another equally (or more) expensive gaming device. Especially not for one game (although it will likely be awesome :))

Consoles are aimed at people who want cheep and idiot proof video gaming, and there's certainly nothing wrong with wanting cheap and idiot proof entertainment. However, these days you can play many of the same games on your cellphone and don't need a console, much less, a PC. When Crysis first came out almost nobody could afford a PC powerful enough to run the game, but now you can play it on your cellphone. PC gaming has always been about pushing the limits of the technology rather than waiting for it to become dirt cheap, but the exciting thing with the new technology coming out is within three years the price of playing high quality video games should come down dramatically encouraging even more people to spend their entertainment money on a PC if they prefer which, of course, makes it harder for companies like Microsoft to monopolize the market, drive prices up, and slow the pace of progress.

It has pretty low system requirements as such things go, but needs 8gb of ram and, of course, a virtual reality headset.

but you can't do mods or unique content on a console.
Skyrim vanilla out-of-the-box doesn't compare at all with modded versions, or any Bethesda game for that matter.
