The four years I spent on active duty and 2 years in the reserves were the most memorable and rewarding experience of my life [IMG]

the two years two months and one day i was in the air force, taught me my parents weren't gods and that i could live on my own without them. other then that it was neither good nor bad nor anything. i mean i'm thankful it did that much, but i'm not thankful for all the wars america has made on the rest of the world just so that could happen.

Back in 1993 at the age of 18 I had a big head and needed a big hat for my overly inflated ego

If you knew how many American vets are still struggling, still not talking about thier service in South East Asia you would be amazed. Out of guilt, shame, or just fear of bad memories flooding back. Jeez- "its been 40 yrs -get over it",. thats the shit I gotta hear- I wish it was that easy.......
I hope this latest generation gets treated better- by the people , the VA, and the suits who sent them to that desert.
I know its a different era,& this is all volenteer, but you would think we learned that just as much damage is done when we get home - its just not the physical horrors that you witnessed when your there.
Sometimes its not all that easy to forget about your time, and move on thru life. - - Many dont get it- - Including us...(me).

only slightly. a lot of people "support the troops" but i don't think too many people care about the individual.

For anyone who hasn't been through a VA hospital, visit one and see the aftermath of the previous wars. Just experiencing that is often too much for the average person.

that's true shaggie.on the street it's usually more difficult to determine who a veteran is.nobody except family, friends would guess i'm a veteran.maybe the scar on my chin....the subject doesn't come up that often and even less than it used to.if someone asks me for a cigarette i might tell them them i'll give them a pack and hand them 4cigs and see if they know what i mean.my hearts still with veterans and the people that are still out on the trail.i wasn't in country long but i still wake up sometimes thinking i have to crawl out there.and have my clothes ,with keys ,wallet cigs and lighter handy in case i need to move quickly.after 40 years the likelihood of this happening is quite remote.but i guess maybe somethings never leave your system....speking of clothing and g.i. issue...remember the friendly, smiling, helpful people that assisted us to ensure proper fit of our uniforms.it was like a pleasant shopping experience.and all of it was free.

    Hi Dana(waukegan)

I thought you might hit this thread. I know that you have had plenty of experience dealing with the VA.- some good -some bad.

Your right though, even 40 yrs later,I find myself keeping rain geer in the trunk of the car at all times-I even check on the sunniest days -lol (remember how it used to rain for weeks at a time- or so it seemed)-
-You would think that after being a "medic" that I would help in an emergency- and maybe I could, but I have a hard time even putting a band aid on my wife sometimes.
Yeah, long over- but not long forgotten-
Anyway- its baseball season- Ill send ya a private note soon- I hear the Twins lost Nathan, thier closer , for awhile- -thats tough.
    we,ll talk soon-
    your friend
    jack

edit to say- shaggie,I think it should me mandatory for all high schools to take a class trip to a VA hospital -
    bestregards,
    jj
