I think most of us here we're dying on a regular basis before and during the first few months of locks, I myself was partial to reds and purples, still am in fact, but dying locks is such a pain in the ass that you just give up. The semi permanent colours do last that bit longer though because obviously your not washing your hair that much so you can get much stronger colours.... its still a pain for washing out the inside of the dreads and worrying too, give it time though, you will be able to start again

i was forever bleaching and dying my hair before i got dreads. i havent bleached or dyed for a year or so now.. i just cant be arsed. so much hassle. i have really dark hair naturally so i have to bleach it shitfucktonloads to get it ready for colour, and its just effort.

three and a bit years later, the bleached/dyed parts of my dreads are starting to break off... as in, the ends are getting thin patches and then it kinda goes frazzled and stuff, and then ill catch them in something and rip off a dread end..

saying that though, the 5inch routes of natural, undyed, unbleached hair that is now growing out is perfectly fine. strong & thick :)

    4 Months!

They've hit dreadlock puberty and they're a horrible mess! I figured there'd be some awkward stages so I'm not stressing much but I'm really not a fan of the massive amount of loose fluff, can't wait for them to sort themselves out a bit! They're thickening up a lot though which is nice to see, I was starting to worry I'd made them too small because some of the sections tightened down to almost nothing but they're feeling a lot more solid now.

Some days I look really scalpy at the back which I'm definitely not enjoying haha, but I think it's just with them being so short they're merrily ignoring gravity and a lot are pointing sideways most of the time, I figure that'll neaten up when they're longer.

The blue was amazing, I kinda miss it, but it's nice not having to worry about the state of my roots, or the fading, or the dye getting on my bathroom, pillows etc! I even ended up with a blue patch on my bedroom radiator somehow haha. When they're longer and more mature I'll probably dye a few again just not my whole head, and I definitely want lots of colourful beads and wraps :)

5 months! Maybe can't see them the best, they're up in bunches today, but they're doing really well. They look similar to 4 months, looking back at the photos, but they've thickened up specially at the back and there's less fuzz. I've definitely gained some length too, this is the first time I've been able to put them up and have them look halfway decent.

Lots of awesome loopy stuff going on near the roots.

I know it's a little soon, but here's some pics from about 2 weeks after the last ones. I wanted to get some in this stage that show how it looks down as well as up - though I took these pics the day they were due for a wash so they're a bit messier than usual!

I'm now a week away from 6 months so I'll have loads of new photos when I get there! I'll try to take them right after a wash and dry as well so you can see them at their best instead of their worst hahaha.

Here's the photos from yesterday, freshly washed so a bit fluffy but at least they're not all pointing in totally different directions from each other this time haha.

I'm really happy with how much progress they're making, and how long they are! I've got a few bits of totally loose hair at the moment (each chunk is only maybe ~10 hairs, most of my hair is at least partially dreaded) and they're barely any longer than the dreads, it seems like I'm getting away with not much shrinkage at all. In 6 months my hair should have grown about 3 inches, and I think my dreads have grown maybe 2 and a half. I thought I might end up with super super short ones so this is a very nice surprise. Can't wait until they're down round my waist or longer though, short hair can be cute but I've had it this length or shorter since I was 15 so I'm well overdue a change.

I've got a few essential oils that I'm using diluted and sprayed on after I wash now - tea tree, lavender and rosewood. I've heard they can be good for dreads/scalp health but to be honest, a big reason is that I miss using lots of fancy scented shampoos now I'm on baking soda washes. It'll be nice to have my hair smell of stuff again!

Mine have shrunk quite a bit but luckily they were/are long anyway.
Are you gunna go funky colours again? :)

Maybe when they're fully mature, I'm not sure yet. I'd really like to go blonde at some point too. I was finding it really hard to keep bleaching my roots without getting it on the rest of the hair, because it's short and because there's still lots of loose fuzz, I used to end up getting bleach over most of the rest of the hair and long term that's going to do a lot of damage. It should be easier when they're longer so I can clip them up, and more mature so there's less loose hair to get in the way. I will definitely want some bright colours at some point, I'll probably start with either a few individual dreads or do a dip dye which will be easier to maintain, and then possibly go back to a full head :)

New photos time! Just turned 7 months. I've started using lemon juice and chamomile tea to try to lighten them a bit, I really want to go blonde but don't want to risk damaging them by properly bleaching so I'll see if I can at least get some natural highlights going on. I use sunbeds so that should help it to work. Aside from that, nothing new.
