You can expect innovation from the Japanese, esp. when it comes to putting good things in small packages. Here's a new twist on vending machines, one that can grow vegetables like lettuce inside the machine and then sell them. Just imagine the possibilities! :sunny: http://www.re-nest.com/re-nest/gardening/dentsu-green-vending-machines-grow-veg-without-sun-131012
That'd work well for radishes, carrots, potatos. It'd be cool too to grab a handful of veg for a snack when your out.
That's really neat. Leave it to the Japanese to think of a way to make healthy foods more convenient. For it to work in America, it would have to dispense brocolli and cheese. lol
I can see it already at your local co-op, collective or dispensary for after hours visitors... leave it in the lobby like a cash machine and fill er up daily. Perhaps after tomorrow these might be in your garden center also. Let's see how the vote swings on Tuesday, Nov. 2 - Don't forget to vote!
It's a nice idea in theory, but, I agree with the second comment in the link... is it environmentally friendly? Energy use/Manufacture etc etc etc. Just because it doesn't say walmart on the side, it still doesn't make it a stunningly good idea.
Actually the 12 florescent bulbs are very energy efficient. And as it's using hydro/aeroponics it doesn't waste any water or fertilizer, certainly not nearly like an outdoor grow would. Hydroponics recirculates water (with some waste). And hydroponics require no pesticides so your produce is much cleaner and healthier. Oh, it's a great idea, one that has been explored by cannabis growers around the world. It's great to see it adopted for indoor growing of vegetables...
are we going to make a machine that eats the food for us too? i wish humans did something not so predictable.
Nothing is more energy efficient than just using the sun for light. It's like no one sees that building machines to do everything for us so we never have to put in a hard days work is going to turn us lazy and rob us of our character. Plants belong outside, I consider this cruelty.
Odon, Think about this a little longer. You make a good point that the artificial lights (even efficient LED ones) do make it not as green as it could be, (but perhaps they use solatubes?) But more to the point don't forget all the fertilizer, transportation, pesticides, labor etc that it saves. Basically all they have to transport to the machine per plant is a few mg of fertilizer and seeds!!! Worst case scenario all these veggies cost to produce is the energy of the light bulbs, a tad of fertilizer, cost of a seed, and a little H2O. Contrast that to the (true no hidden carbon costs) accounting of regular agriculture! With this there is almost no need to burn natural gas to make and transport the fertilizer (hydroponics conserves fertilizer unlike conventional factory farms) No need to ship or truck in from hundreds or thousands of miles away. No need for pesticides, no need for herbicides, little worry about common contagious plant diseases. No worry about losses from insects. All in all, this may be one of the best ideas for fixing our broken food system that I have ever heard of!
Exactly, not to mention its better business for promoting healthier eating. When you had to go to a supermarket to get veggies and then prepare them, you wouldn't always have time to fix a healthy snack. Now there is competition against the junk food in vending machines. Marijuana in a vending machine would be cool, veggie munches eh?
Id buy from it if it grew mini purple cabbages ...mmmm..I love that stuff not more than 2 or 3$ bucks though
this is soooo sick!! I just wonder, does technology increase the chances of cancers? Will these vegetables and fruits etc, be safe to eat for generations ahead? Or will they cause problems with DNA, etc? Trippy thing to wonder.
