So I recently became a vegetarian and Im going through the process of trying and discarding, so I was wondering from all the stuff that is out there.. what do you like?? I just tried today Amy's burgers, the california style one (I dont know if there are more) and I LOVE it, so yummy... I also had this Vegetarian Chili from President's Choice and that was horrible, tasted like medicine, so no no to that.
amys texas burgers(vegan) are great and organic i think. morningstar vegan grill burger is my favorite though. any type of vegan sausage crumble is great in spaghetti sauce, shepards pie, chili, etc. thats about the only fake meat products i eat. i eat them very rarely.
It doesnt have to be all fake meat products, I plan to slowly make my way into a completely vegan diet, so I want to start introducing these kind of things slowly into my diet.. it could be a brand of yogurt you like, cheese, I dont know.. anything that comes to mind
something I never had before making the merge into nearly vegan (I don't think it can be done fully and I personally could not use the name) was Swedish Fish. I've not checked the color source, however. I also eat licorice allsorts except for the jels which have gelatin (I share them at work). more a tool than product is my juicer. It's an Omega and I freaking love it. Need to perfect reusable filters, tho. had a rather ick clean up with shredded cheesecloth last night.
This is my favorite food ever, chocolate - http://www.sunfood.com/cgi-bin/order/index.cgi?id=17881122903&d=single&item_id=1059&m=home Also, there are over 35 vegetarian products here for less than 2$ which is an incredible deal you may wanna check out - http://cgi.ebay.com/HUGE-Vegetarian-Lot-Peta-Vegan-Animal-Rights-Healthy_W0QQitemZ260164868593QQihZ016QQcategoryZ47103QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Amy's California burgers are my favorite veggie burgers!!!! Just had to say. =P So do you mean like substitute quick stuff? If thats the case then... I like a lot of Amy's stuff that I've had, the pizzas are awesome and I like the enchilada stuff. Amy's chili isn't so great though. Ummm morningstar has the best fake hot dogs out of the ones I've tried, morningstar is a good brand for a lot of stuff, they have good veggie burgers too and good sausage links. Oh I also get this taco filling stuff thats in a box (not frozen, usually in the ethnic aisle at grocery stores), its Fantastic brand and it takes 5 minutes to make and its really good... even to people that eat meat. And I like to get some of the Indian stuff that comes in packages in boxes, also in the ethnic aisle... those are usually pretty yummy. BUT you need to try some good Indian food from a good Indian restaurant too! Lots of vegetarian options and its amazingly good, in my opinion! Yeah so thats some quick stuff I usually get for when I want something quick and easy and yummy!
I don't replace products because that vast majority of them are so unhealthy- full of soy (which I don't really eat), rice, or flour fillers and generally has gluten. Personal preference though.
Yeah I love Indian food, it's one of my favorites. I love Morning Star products but I've been unable to find them here in Ottawa, although I've only been to one supermarket, so who knows. It deosnt have to be substitute quick stuff, it can be anything. Because Im also trying to slowly introduce vegan products to my diet, see how long it takes me to make the full transformation, but slowly, only have a few months being a vegetarian, but I guess is always good to know what people get when they go to the supermarkert. Has anyone tried those Tofurky producst? They have a funny name but they kinda scare me at the same time
I think I tried tofurkey slices.. or maybe it was smart deli. It was supposed to be fake turkey slices and it was really really gross. Smart Deli brand is just icky in general in my opinion. I guess something else I like to make is pasta with lots of veggies and artichokes and pesto... its easy and really yummy!
Yeah .. I love Pasta I really like Beans too, but I never know with what to eat it or how to make them.
haha...it scares me too, kinda. but apparently it's realy good! so i suppose it's worth a shot...although you would probably be much better off making your own seitan and marinating it (if you have the time). You can probably find frozen what gluten at an Asian market; Ottawa is pretty good for finding specialty foods.
I like nuts. I mean they're nice on their own but when you put them in things it's friggin' awesome. Had a toasted walnut and green bean dish the other day and just want more. Also a nutted pilaf that was to die for. And I make sauces out of them all the time. Ohmiguh JUICER! I just got one a few months ago and I don't know how I managed to live before. Mine's a Breville bunch-of-numbers fountain something. Best. Appliance. Ever.
For me, I think raw nuts are one of my absolute favorite "veggie" foods. You can toss them in or on absolutely anything for a bit of protein I LOVED the Morningstar buffalo nuggets... tasted like a spicy chicken nugget, so it was perfect for when I absolutely craved ketchup & mustard on something. Oh, and I'm learning to love lentils! Instead of beans, beans, beans I've taken to tossing some of them in with my rice instead... YUMMY! love, mom
I like Boca's Burgers better then Amy's, and Boca's~Italian meatless sausage are to die for. I always keep them in the freezer.
all those soy products (like boca and morningstar, t.v.p) make me fart and have a burpy time. i stay away from them, my son gets the shits too, so no soymilk either. we eat beans and rice, lentils and rice (brown rice) tofu (we don't have a problem with tofu for some reason) but we buy the old fashioned kind of curd chinese style or japanese style, not the kind in the aseptic containers. we also freeze it before we use it, it does a nice thing where it changes the texture to a more chewy toughness. then we defrost, squeeze out the water and then it'll absorb your flavors you'd like without reabsorbing the flavors. how to make beans? well here's my trick. I soak the beans for at least 2 hours. this releases the simple sugars that make one fart. then i drain em. then i cook em. if you have a slow cooker, it's an all day affair on high, with about an inch of water over the beans, last hour you add your garlic, your veggie bouillon, spices, whatever. but it's not recommended to add any salty products to the beans until they are fully cooked, as it actually prevents the beans from softening (osmosis). So on the stove top, after you soak the beans you'd put them in fresh water, one inch higher than the top of the beans. turn up the heat until they boil, then turn down the heat real low to a small simmer, half cover with a lid (don't cover completely of it'll overflow. I recommend putting veggie bouillon and garlic into the rice water and allowing the rice to cook into that flavored water, does a nice trick. they used to make legume pasta, but i haven't seen it in the health-food store in a long, long time. we eat a lot of hempseed. my kid clammers for it, by the spoonful. miso soup is a really favorite here lately. they make all kinds, from the mellow white to the dark red. i prefer the raw organic type, if i go into a asian market (it's a mixed (here i haven't found a wholly asian market yet) i notice a lot of the sauces and misos and curries (asian curry, not thai) have MSG in a common ingredient. Also, coconut milk thickened with cornstarch or arrowroot and a tiny bit of green curry rocks the socks off. the green curry paste is of good quality brand and not too expensive, last forever (cause it's hot) and doesn't have crazy preservatives. I like the brand: mai ploy which is a thai brand. but it has shrimp paste in it. (oops) i didn't notice that before. on the raw side I live on purple cabbage salad with apple and carrot (shred carrot with a veggie peeler instead of a grater, nice thin slices). I have a veggie mandolin which slices thing really thin, and increases the enjoyment of eating cabbage raw, i use any kind of salad dressing, like red pepper vinaigrette, some lemon or lime on the apple, and raw apple vinegar. roasting red peppers and making sandwiches and the same with portabello mushroom sandwiches too. yummy. that's all off the top of my head, i have to go play now bye!
