since gelatin is made from the hoofs and toe or fingernail clippings of animals, does anyone know if its possible to make gelatin from one's own toe or fingernail clippings and therefore make one's own gelatin? ... and too, such nail clippings procurred will be from free range humans

    Honestly, uh, I don't know.

But you would probably be interested that vegetable-based gelatin DOES exist, and that gelatin is only USUALLY non-vegan.

There are several products on the market that, if you call up the manufacturer and ask, they will tell you that they use a vegetable gelatin instead of animal-based gelatin.

gelatin is made from skin and bones and not nailklippings..... as far as I know. Still not vegan, or vegetarian. but not fingernailklippings.

there are severel plant based "gelatins". The most well known product is Agar, made from algea. then Pictin, comes from the skin of apples, and I think there are some others.

posted by kalisurfer from another website in answer to my inquiry

"Here is a recipe for Human Collagen Gelatin that was stolen from the Human Enterprise Institute in Washington DC, not to mention an additional recipe on how to use this gelatin in making something like Jell-o.

How To Make Human Collagen Gelatin

    Goal:
Colorful dried human collagen gelatin shapes that can be used to make Hell-o (human jell-o), custard, decorations, and more!

    Time Required: 2-3 days

    Here's How:
    1. Mix one bar of anti-bacterial lye soap and 8 oz of Coca-Cola in a saucepan over high heat.

    2. Stir in the 3 envelopes of finely ground toe or fingernail clippings to dissolve. Cook and stir for 6 hours or until thickened.

    3. Pour the mixture into a plastic lid with a rim, push the air bubbles out with a spoon and separate any toe lint with a cheese cloth or used gumcha, and let the gelatin cool on the counter for 24 hours.

    4. Remove the gelatin disk from the lid. It should be flexible and pliable.

    5. Use cookie cutters to make interesting shapes or likenesses, like Hindu demigods (never Mohammed though)!

    6. Shapes may be dried flat on a cookie sheet or cooling rack. Spirals may be hung by clothespins. Shapes with holes may be strung on string to dry. The gelatin will be hard like plastic in 2-3 days.

    7. Be creative! Have fun, heck…now you can go ahead and make some Hell-o!

Recipe for Hell-o (Human Collagen Jell-o):

    1. Into a saucepan--
    2. 1 quart fruit juice
    3. 4 two inch square shapes of dried Human Collagen Gelatin
    4. Stir to dissolve, bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer and simmer 20 – 30 minutes.
    5. Add fruits and pour into a shallow dish, chill.

Note: this may not be quite a firm as Jell-o, but it really tastes good, especially if the human source of gelatin ate organic foods and a lot of sugar.
