I've been vegetarian for 9 years, and vegan for 5. I am now preggo. and Just wondering if anyone else had a vegan pregnancy out there? I feel like my doctor looks at me funny because I don't drink milk.

Heya. were both vegan and trying to conceive, and I will be having a vegan pregnancy as weve been vegan for years too

Just ignore everyone hun, so many women have healthy pregnancies without cows milk, think of all the lactose intolerant ladies out there...you know what your body needs, if you have a varied vegan diet with plenty of vits, minerals, protein, calcium etc youll be just great...Honestly just listen to your heart and go with what your body, and the baby wants (No doubt youre doing all this anyway)

Sorry Im not a fellow preggie vegan yet but hopefully soon!

Anyway have a really happy pregnancy and dont worry. Stick to your guns. You dont have to go into detail about your diet unless there are any issues so Id just keep it to myself. Some people just arent educated well yet

Its important you get a stable calcium source. With vitamin D, otherwise it won't absorb as well.

If you don't, the baby will suck it out of your own bones.

I think the majority of pregnant women take a suppliment with added calcium. All the pregnancy care tablets Ive looked at have it anyway. And there are other sources than animal milk. But yes all the essentials need to be covered

Trust your body, and what it tells you it wants. If you suddenly start craving cheese, eat some good, cow friendly cheese. Etc. for other foods.

Please do NOT just trust your body!

Building a baby is the single most important thing you will do in your entire life!

Do a lot of nutritional research. Trust your obstetrician. Do not trust online advice. Do this thing the right way. There are no do-overs. Build a healthy baby!

Being a good mother starts the day that you discover that you are pregnant.

    Good luck!

I ate totally veggie with my last 2 pregnancies....which was probably against my ob-gyn and all my families advice, but I knew my body better then any of them.
All 7 of my babies were born healthy..3 of them over 9 pounds.

I will agree, do LOTS of research and take your pre-natal vitamins.

sesame seeds, green veggies (and lots of them)
a calcium/magnesium/ vit D supplement is not a bad idea.

I was lacto veg during my pregnancy, but I threw up all dairy except plain yogurt.
I just found the other natural sources, took a supplement for added security, and I did NOT trust the only ob-gyn that took the crappy insurance.

You're right, better to trust someone who at the very best has 40 years experience, then to trust you body that has several million years worth of knowledge in it. I'm sure people didn't have children before the advent of obstetricians.

Not trusting your body is the same as you feel freezing, you shiver, but you don't put on a jacket until the thermometer tells you it's 58 degrees. Or you only eat when it's 12:00pm, regardless of whether you're hungry or not.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking that someone else knows what's best for you. If you listen to your body closely, it will tell you what it needs.

It's also important to note that NO society on earth has ever been vegan- The reason? It is not healthy enough to sustain life over more than a few generations.

Eat what you want, but in my opinion it's not right to subject children to unhealthy diets when they are developing.

Nowadays there are plenty of very animal friendly dairies out there.

I hope that you have already raised your children and that they have grown be healthy adults.

In my post that seems to have offended you I cannot find anyplace where I recommended that a pregnant woman ignore her body. In my narrow-minded opinion a person who ignores any valid source of information is acting stupidly. Acting stupidly while pregnant should be a capital crime!

If you have not already raised your children, then please do not ignore the fast amount of knowledge possessed by modern science.

Here is a wonderful community of vegan mamas of all ages:
    http://www.postpunkkitchen.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=39

you won't get told to drink cow milk there, I guarantee you!
Not that you should abandon us for PPK, however.
Listen to the cravings, then fill them. But know that cravings are not good communicators of specifics.
In cold weather, I'm not made ill by the thought of meat. I don't want it, but my body wants fat, or protein, or even some micro-nutrient in the sauce I used to use.

as for cheese in pregnancy, on my next to last day, I gave in and cubed some cheese. I proceeded to slice my finger to the bone.
    THAT was karma.

OldTroll- Not offended at all, and I'm sorry if my post came across that way; that was not my intention.

From my point of view, there is no greater intelligence in this equation than a woman's body. It seems that trusting one's body should be paramount to other intellectual resources.

After all, science, medicine, etc. are constantly changing. Only a few years ago premies weren't touched at all, breastfeeding was discouraged, and all sorts of other things now considered ludicrous and idiotic were "common knowledge." In fact the position in which women deliver has nothing to do with medical knowledge, but with French voyeurism. I'm not saying medicine is not worth considering, but a women's body trumps all other knowledge a hundred times over.

I was reading about osteoporosis and vegan/vegetarianism yesterday... The guy was talking about how [as an example] there was a tribe, and they barely eat meat. [real tribe] The women consume about 350 mg of calcium each day, which is about 25% of the DV. The average woman in those tribes have about 9 kids in their lifetime, and they are all very healthy, and the woman has no signs of osteoporosis. and it is not genetic because they compared them with the people from that tribe living in america, who have just the same problems as us...

you can take all of the calcium and minerals that you want, I just thought it was cool that you dont really need that much.

With all due respect, your conclusion is illogical. I would venture to suggest that in many of Earth's societies, selective eating isn't an option. Living in poverty, one eats whatever one can. Veganism is a luxury of the rich -- and by that I mean the rich individual. A rich society would stand to lose a great deal of money if all its members converted to veganism. Down go the slaughterhouses, the dairy farms, the processing plants, the fast food chains, etc. Meat is an industry worth billions. It's unreasonable to expect a society to collectively go vegan, whether it's healthy enough to sustain us or not.

I made my mother eat raw flour when she was pregnant with me.

It's a wonder I didn't turn out like the Pillsbury Dough Boy. :)
