I've heard online that using salvia in a vaporizor is a bad idea, but one of my friends is having trouble getting it to work for him effectively, we've tried a few times, following the guides to the letters, but were beginning to think he's a hard head. Would a vaporizor still be a bad idea in his case? Thanks in advance, AdOutsider
Using salvia in a vaporizer *that is designed to vaporize another substance, such as cannabis* is a bad idea and won't do anything for you. However, if you have a vaporizor specifically designed to vaporize salvinorin-A, then go for it; it shouldn't be bad at all. Just watch out ... taking way too much could throw you all the way up to the amnesic state! Look for problems smoking before you get a vaporizer, to make sure that he's just not smoking it right.
Ok, where can I get a vaporizor designed for Salvia? OR what would the difference be between a regular vaporizor and one designed for salvia?
A vaporizer created for, say, cannabis, is designed to vaporize tetrahydrocannibol (THC; the active ingredient in cannibus). One designed for salvia will vaporize salvinorin-A. The main difference being: salvinorin-A has a much higher vaporization temperature than THC does. This means that a vaporizer for cannibus wont' work on salvia, or it will just burn up excess material and leave the salvia smouldering, and you won't get any salvinorin-A. salvinorin-A, if it isn't exposed to enough heat, will just burn and smoulder and will become useless; which means you're wasting all of your salvia if you use a cannibus vaporizer. How do you get one? Well, I don't actually know, they aren't common at all, and I'm guessing they're expensive because they're hard to make. If you are vaporizing to avoid the ill-effects on your lungs, then I would recommend using quids instead of smoking it. =)
No vaporizers would work well for smoking salvia simply because you have to smoke a lot of the substance in a short periode at a high temperature... I always used a torch to burn it, ans inhaled through a bong to cool the smoke.
psilonaut, a vaporizer would work with salvia if the temperature could be adjusted to be high enough to vaporize salvinorin-A. That would have the exact same effect as torching the whole thing with a lighter, except without all the tar and whatnot from the leaf.
But think of the logistics. You have to load alot of plant matter into the bowl, most vaporizers don't have large bowls. You need around 500mg of plant matter heated at a high temperature. I was thinking that the vapir might work, but i doubt that you could fit that much salvia leaf into it... and the heat is a major factor, personaly i need ice chips or water to cool the smoke down... In theory it is possible...just not very practical.
(1) Logs, we joked about being lumberjacks in Calculus class because we could "roll logs all day" ... (2) "most vaporizers don't have large bowls" : Except for the salvia vaporizers, which are (usually) designed with this in mind ... (3) Extracts do not require large bowls to begin with, and extracts aren't much more expensive than leaves, if they are more expensive at all; you are still getting an approximately relative amount of salvinorin-A for your money, so it is probably more practical to buy the extract anyway. (4) You are right that the smoke will be very hot, and vaporizers do not cool down smoke (unless you're one of those urban legendary salvia smokers who can make their own water-cooled vaporizer . However, because only the salvinorin-A is being vaporized, the smoke, although hot, is much less harsh on the lungs, due to all of the tar and et ceteras that are not in the smoke. It would still be easier to breathe in than the smoke from a standard non-water-cooled pipe, and I've smoked out of this, and it's not too terribly hard ... though it is admittedly more uncomfortable. =) And I mean no offense by this post, I am just defending my viewpoint on salvia vaporizers. I know I have a tendency to be sarcastic or satirical, but it's not meant personally, only as a mechanism for winning the argument.
You know what? You're right hehe, I completly forgot about extracts...A high potency extract would probably work brilliantly with a vap.
And likewise, it's probably a bad idea if you plan on trying to vaporize the leaves anyway. =P Anyway, good luck if you plan on vaporizing! =)
So lets seeeee here... I've smoked salvia before, and it didn't anything for me, so obviously since it does work what am I doing wrong? Do you have to use a very hot heat source? I just pak a bowl and smoked it like I would pot. Ummmmm That was before I got my vaporizer though...WANANA. So ya I got the vaporizer and I've had it for 7months or so and I still barely get stoned from it when I smoked pot out of it, its more of a body high for me, like when you eat brownies. Is this normal? I thought vaporizers were supposed to kick your assss. That was pretty on topic..........
If you're trying to smoke salvia like you would weed, then you are doing it all wrong, which is why you're not getting anything from it. This is what you need to do: If you haven't already, get some extract (it's much easier to use than the actual leaves, because you have to smoke a lot of salvia in a little amount of time). Then, pack a bowl of extract/dried leaves. Ice-water-cooled bongs are a HUGE recommendation, as it cools the air a LOT and makes it MUCH easier to take in. When you take a hit, make sure you TORCH the FUCK out of the bowl the ENTIRE time you are inhaling. The smoke is going to be harsh as fuck (particularly if you don't use an ice water bong), but if you're using 5x extract, 2 or 3 gigantic hits from an ice water bong ought to do it for maximum level. I know that salvia burns a lot faster than weed does, and with weed, it's very easy to be passed a lit bowl and instead of relighting, just keeping it aflame. You can't do that with salvia, so don't try; the moment you stop torching, there isn't enough heat to vaporize the salvinorin-a, and you'll just smoulder it (which makes it useless from thereonin).
