Well is been 6 years since a 'family vacation' and wally world is out, Been there and done that. This time she wants to go and see 'the south'. Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas. She would like to see homes and old plantations. We want to take old back roads to see the 'old south' and other areas as well. Just looking for cool places to see that's not mainstream or pimped hard like other vacation spots. I like to go to places that a movie was based from. I wen to Wabasha MN to slippery's tavern where grump/grumpier old men was based, Sandusky OH where tommy boy was based, Places like that. I remember fried green tomatoes and Valdosta GA, But cant remember where in Alabama the whistle stop café was. But mainly looking for ideas and cool places to stop at on the way back. Its mainly a huge road trip so we can see as much as possible. Any info or places of interest would be great, Just gonna play it by the day for the most part, But if we can line up different things we like, Make it easier. Thanks for any help and info you can give.
If you are going all the way to the ocean I loved St Simon's Island, Ga. I've been to Georgia a handful of times because my sister lived there for a while. I haven't been to any of the other states you mentioned. You should Google movie locations in each state and see what you find. Sounds like it could be a really fun trip.
Well, you're a little young for this, but there is Mt. Airy, N.C. a little to the east of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Mt. Airy is the home town of Andy Griffith and was the inspiration for the TV town of Mayberry on the Andy Griffith show which aired for 8 years and won numerous awards and consistent top ratings and is still broadcast everyday. Visit the Andy Griffith museum and his childhood home, the playhouse, Floyd's barbershop, etc. and take a Mayberry squad car tour. Then run over to Pilot Mountain, the model for Mayberry's rival town, Mount Pilot. A good time for all!
That's kinda why I made the thread. There is no point other than a 'round trip' of the south eastern united states. I just mentioned I usually find myself going to a movie themed area lol. Kinda like if you were going there, What would you want to see. I got tossed a 'trip' and have no clue where to start lol. She said 'I wanna go here and here' and .... That's about it. She wants to go where its 'warm', Or id say Colorado lol. But im lost at 'what to do'. I cant take or use a 4x4, Dirt bike(s) and or quads. 'Family vacation' she keeps saying, Not even golf!
If you're going all the way to the coast Savannah is beautiful, has a lot of history, and you can see the bench where Forrest Gump sat in Forrest Gump as well as the restaurant where Jenny worked towards the end of the movie. Dirty Dancing was filmed at Lake Lure near Chimney Rock, NC. The mountains in that area are beautiful too.
You might want to get the travel books from the library for the states that you are planning to visit. How many people traveling and what ages? How many miles do you want to/plan to travel? When do you plan to go? How long will the vacation be? What's your budget? Do you want to stay in hotels? Camper or RV? Here's some stuff that I found. Peeble Hill and Notoway look pretty boss. http://www.backroadstraveler.net/Plantations.html https://www.google.com/#q=southern+plantation+tours+alabama
Thanks for the links, That's a great start. Three, GF, Son 4yr and I. Going to cover as much ground as possible. When I get tired of driving, Start looking for cheap hotel. Gonna leave around the 15 IIRC and go through the 24th of march. You know how budgets go, But shooting for $2500. Gonna rent a 35mpg car to do it in so fuel cost is low. That's leaves more fun money.
"Family Vacation" sounds like code for only doing what she wants. You can probably squeeze in a game of golf or two, and she can do something else.
You might want to bring along a list of hotels (and their prices) ahead of time. Ask them about availability around this time of year. If you start to get tired of driving, the GF can call places, and you can make sure that they've got a room available so that you don't have to spend a lot of time hunting around. One of the common mistakes made in vacations is trying to cram in too much. You spend huge amounts of time traveling around, getting ready to go places, trying to be on-time for stuff. Unless you really like driving a whole lot, you might want to cut down on the mileage and give yourself more time at each stop. Doing multiple weekend trips might be an option too.
LMAO, You got it! Glued together good old 'family vacation' haha. Our last, Was my choosing and time, Ill give her, Hers. If its one thing im good at, Its driving. No citations and always alert and law abiding. I figured I could cover extra ground by driving 12-14+ hours straight. To me, Im most at home behind a wheel. But I get the drift, Cram/drive= not really see shit seen in the long run. My cousin travels abroad, Around the country, You name it. He said to use my smart phone and google maps and driving directions. Hes realy savvy though, But he said you just use it like you want it. If you want shell gas only, It will pop shell only stations and ramps, For food/attractions, He said in each area and every hour, Pop it up and refresh it. He said there is too much to the phones, Most don't use them to their fullest. But ill check for events along the roads I set in stone here in a couple weeks. Get some hotel rates etc and if they are AAA/AARP friendly. Cheaper the better! But its her last 'spring break' before graduation and wants to take a trip. I did before we met and she wants to at least go on one. That's why the 'crammed' party hard type vacation in a little over a weeks time. My son has his tablet and can play birds or whatever he likes and or chill and listen to tunes. Hes good about going to the bathroom and holding it so last of my worries, She will be more whinny than him. But I cant wait to loose more hair! I always love the that's the exit as you drive passed it. I can feel the headache now from the shotgun driving! lol
Hmmmm………. Alabama State Penitentiary Coeur d’Alene, Idaho for a meet and greet with white supremacists Waco, Texas to meet with the last surviving member of the branch dividians Dodge City, KS for a good ole’ fashioned shoot-out with the sheriffs department Ruby Ridge, Idaho; prayer services for the fallen Weaver Family Hartford Connecticut to meet the descendants of Samuel Colt Hotwater:2thumbsup:
I was thinking as I was looking at the plantation homes that their splendor and extravagance was built with slavery. So there is an ugly side to the beauty. That said, I don't think that visiting these places is bad. They're just homes now. Yogi's GF has probably just watched too much downton abbey, and the plantation homes are the closest thing to that within a short drive
I would like to see Holman correctional facility, I live by ISP and its one of the oldest, I like seeing the layouts of prisons. I figured we would swing by klan mountain, Get a rally in the mix if time I live in Iowa, Where there a shit ton of corn/bean/hay/cow/horse/pig/wind generator farms. Farms that have been around since early 1800's. With that said, We would also like to see the southern farms and plantations. Not all plantations ran on slave labor and or some 'worked' there and made a wage. Not all were high and mighty 'whities' with a whip! Even more so, If they did build the plantations, They did a good fucking job at it and built something that is still standing today with up keep. There is always going to be a bad side to a coin! I want to go down the old highways for the fact of mom and pop stores, Gas stations etc along the highway. Not fly down the interstate looking at trees and cars. No TV show or movies behind the trip, I just like to go to those spots if im in that area for the fun factor, Like the bench and café meliai mentioned. Just the way people carry and keep their farms/homes up and the historic factor of the area. Just going out to see all of what the great USA has to offer. I have been to 22 states in my life and hope to hit all lower 48!
I guess old route 66 is not on the agenda? Always wanted to do that. To see the cross country road and the roadside attractions that were there before the freeways were built.
that had to be kind of disappointing. nothing in that movie was even remotely based on the actual town, besides the town's name. and if it was within the last 10 years or so, the whole place is pretty much pimped like a mainstream vacation spot like you say you have no interest in.
Yeah, I knew, Was in the area anyway and thought it would be cheap. Yeah fucking right! Only place that had a room after a 18 hour drive was wolf creek lodge, Was a few hundred a night and I did nothing but sleep lol. That was 08'/09' so im sure its worse.
