When I go to a gathering, I make it what it is to me. If I'm camped next to inconsiderate people, I move. If people ask me for things that I don't want to give them, I say no. I find family, and I get to know them. Lead by example to those who may be confused about what rainbow is about. If you aren't sure what to say, ask an elder. People are people...even in rainbow land. If you feel like rainbow is going down hill, make yourself a camp/kitchen/whatever and do it the right way. I also sometimes feel like people are not being very grateful for rainbow. I went to the Ithaca gathering...it was my first. I heard nothing but how shitty that gathering was, how horrible people were being, blah blah blah, rainbow is going down hill. Even with how "terrible" that gathering was, I still quit my life and left for rainbow trail because rainbow is amazing. Maybe it's not as good as it once was, but it's still a saving grace in my, and many others, life. It's a beautiful thing and I don't think it should ever be taken for granted. Sorry if I'm bitching, if I'm out of place or whatever. All I know is that I'm in a house right now for reasons out of my control. I miss the woods so bad it hurts, I come here to talk to family and it's sad to see a lot of bitching about rainbow.

i never bitch about rainbow because to me its the most amazing & most important thing this world has going for it
without rainbow i'd lose a;ll hope for humanity i think
sure we have our problems at times, but we are buildimng a nation that spans all cultures & beliefs and nationalities & exists everywhere, and as a nation we are so young, so inexperienced & are learning new ways to exist peacefuly
no nation has ever been perfect as soon as it formed
we are just going through the growing pains it takes to becomed a stronger more unified family
    loving you sister

i sort of feel the same about burning man... only it's usually me who's bitching

bitching about how it seems like it's being infested with parties and booze. don't get me wrong, i like parties and booze but when it seems like the focus of a fest that's "supposed" to be about art and self expression... i dunno... it's like it's just a big 7 day rave with the theme of burning man now.

but yea, interesting to hear that about rainbow fests. i've never been to one but i'm sure i'll be going to at least 1 or 2 next summer. i'll try my best to help make it what it's there for.

i've never been to burning man or ever even wanted to go, just after rainbow it couldnt possibly compare & could only dissapoint
i've been going to gatherings almost 20 years now & i'm probly getting close to the 40 gathering point (lost count long ago) & its true some gatherings are far better then others, but even the worse gathering i've ever been too sure beats anything else that the world has to offer

Rainbow is what you make it. Like the above said, if you dont like your neighbors find a new pace to camp, if kitchens are not up to your par, form one that is or go help one already in the works.... You can dream it or do it..... doing it gets you there quicker....

And yes! Any rainbow beats no rainbow!

I have never been to a gathering personally, still can't help to comment because gee, I'm so interested and am hoping, visualizing;) of hitting up next year's nationals and to me, rainbow is still a dream..yes i am idealistic sometimes, but to me, rainbow isn't totally out of my view just because I've never been to a gathering..when I think of going to a rainbow gathering, I think of it as being around beautiful people who are aware and who appreciate, the pure things in life, the truth seekers, and who know how important community is, I think of it as a place to express all our love and experience family love.
what an insane time to be on this earth, but it's so interesting that all kinds of ancient wisdom and healing practices are also happening and becoming of interst..I think people are more sensitive these days.. although, not all are there yet and so it is understandable that there is selfish, negative vibes..that's just polarity.
and absolutely I think it's sad to hear the bad stories about gatherings, just like it's sad to hear about thousands of people dying..it happens though..that's all. And it is a definate heart struggle..
and soaringeagle, man I always love to hear what you say..what a beautiful beautiful spirit!! that's what I imagine gatherings to be like.

Is the gathering in Ithaca in July? I've never been to a gathering and I really want to go this year (with my mom, heh). Anywho, Ithaca is the closest to me, so I'm bugging a little about when it is... Don't want to miss it.

Regionals (smaller but still great gatherings) are all through out the year, but in July everyone connects in one spot called the national with the peak being July 4th I usually show about about a week before the 4th and stay a few days after to help with clean up... http://204.60.163.141/rainbow/rainbow/ is a great place to start or http://welcomehere.org/states.php

HipForums has a lot less 'anti-Rainbow propaganda' than some other Rainbow chat spaces(who shall remain nameless).

You have a really great attitude for someone your age Princess Sara. Rainbow is all about making it what you want it to be. Thank you for being you!

Well, hey! Hehe. Actually I'm closer to Watkins Glen. I haven't been many places so Ithaca seems like forever away to me...

ha! Soaring eagle, you missed the two nationals I did hit (I like small gatherings...kinda people phobic), New Mexico 95 and Missouri 96, where I married the love of my life. (6/29)

Rainbow, like BM, is 90 percent attitude. I usually am working a fest in Cali on Rainbow week, but might be able to slip out to early Colorado.

on an onther incarnation of this board I asked what the older/experienced folks were doing to kepp that tradition as we saw it alive and passing it on to the younger ones/less experienced.
good ideads, including something along the lines of " let 'em be."
