The UN General Assembly is set to vote on a motion calling on Israel to respect a world court ruling to tear down part of its West Bank separation barrier, with European support still up in the air.

Correspondents say Arab delegates are trying to ensure backing for the resolution from the European Union.

The resolution was drafted after the International Court of Justice announced the barrier was illegal.

The 191-nation General Assembly has no power to push countries to act on its recommendations, but the issue could then go to the Security Council which theoretically has the power to impose economic sanctions.

The Palestinians were hoping that European Union support would give strength to the assembly resolution which, though not legally binding, reflects a consensus of international opinion.

The Palestinian Authority has said it will delay pushing for a Security Council resolution until after the U.S. presidential elections in November.

Israel still insist on its false claims that the barrier is meant to protect Israelis from Palestinian fighters. Opponents say the barrier, which juts into the West Bank, is a trick to seize land and complicates moves to create a Palestinian state.

Israel says it will comply with an Israeli Supreme Court ruling ordering the 640 km (400 mile) barrier to be re-routed around Jerusalem, but has vowed to carry on with construction.

Don't hold your breath. The General Assembly votes have even less value to the Israelis than those of the SC and given the 60+ resolutions Israel has ignored over the 35 years (give or take a few) there is no chance the zionists will change their behaviour or their long held agenda of achieving the restoration of "Greater Israel" by hook or by crook.

It's probable for it to pass and head onto the security council, where it will be vetoed by the US, no matter which president wins.

Right now, most European countries have criticized the international court's ruling. So I do expect them to vote against the motion.

The motion would be powerless anyhow, Israel swore to complete the barrier, and so it will. It's a big step for us.

The General Assembly has no power in the Middle East, it never had any to begin with. Even when the UN legaly established Israel as a state, the arab countries did not accept it.

Anyhow, we shall see tonight, hopefully, the world will ignore the internanal court's biased ruling.

 

The UN is powerless by their own doing. They stood by waving their dicks in the air while N. Korea developed nukes, they bitched and moaned during the War in Iraq but did nothing, they have a history of ignoring genocide and injustice, and their precious Declaration of the Rghts of Man is being shat on daily by countries everywhere. Plus, Israel's army could beat the shit out of anyone who tried to take down the wall forcibly. Even if this does pass, it would be meaningless.

The wall separates Palestine from Israel, bring it closer to becoming a state of its own.

The international court report NEVER mentioned the main fuction of the wall... keeping terrorist suicide bombers out of Israel. It's working, by the way, there hasn't been a suicide bombing in a long time.

This is not Berlin, the same country it is not the same people that are being separated...

Well, I did expect this... the UN voted against the wall, in a huge majority... I'm glad that they are powerless, such ignorance should not be provided with power.

 

In a manner of speaking, it doesn't matter what the World Court or the U.N. rules. If the wall works keeping Israel secure from suicide bombings, then it going up. I don't think Israel is going to allow World Opinion dictate how they manage its security concerns.

Coupled with targeting Hamas leaders, the rate of killing civilians could decrease. Seems the rate of suicide bombings has already decreased in the recent months.

Nothing proves a tactic better than success.

 

Since the wall has been built, terrorist attacks have decreased by 90%. I don’t like the idea of the wall either but it’s working.

MANY FAMILIES have had to move because of the wall... so many more palestinians have been raped of their land... 90% my ass... israelis are the real killers... so many more palestinian lives have been lost than israelis.. maybe this wall will prove a good thing for PALESTINE... but i fear the genocide isnt over until israel is put in its place.

 

Israel and the Palestinians should be working out their differences. We wouldn't even have to be debating the wall issue if their differences could be worked out.
