I have family live in Cairo, there is a hotel not far away, luxury you wouldn't believe!

But the big guy from Saudi stays there with his daughters, parading them to suitable men, to marry them off, these are the daughter's to lesser wives!

And not at all what you expect! But I guess he feels the need to rid himself of a few, as he has so many wives! Vile man!

There have been quite a few threads about the Saudis. Nothing to add here, other than to repeat that they're one of the worst regimes on the planet, and it's sick the way the west kow-tows to them.

Its not that we dont care, just that most here, myself included, as soon as anyone mentions the UN, its groan time

Saudi Arabia is also on the human rights council, what a joke, besides all the bullshit that happens with woman in that country, theres also a whole lot of shit that happens with foreign workers, getting raped, murdered, forced slavery and they are on the human rights council ????

Saudi Arabia, North Korea - why do we tolerate Nth Korea? and China, there is still a lot of commie bullshit that the chinese government does to its own people

These are the three nastiest in the world as its all government sanctionedyet a bunch of hillbillies in northern Iraq get all the attention

Saudi Arabia has so much wealth and so much control that last year, just for the hell of it, they started pumping out oil just to tank oil prices in order to fuck with Russia's currency.
So I'm gonna say that's probably why they're allowed to join in all the reindeer games despite being a giant asshole.

I agree - we should stand up for human rights wherever abuses happen. However - the UK doesn't sell millions of pounds worth of arms to either China or N.Korea, (although we do a lot of business with China)so to me it's a situation where, as a UK citizen, I'm disgusted with my country's government. To add insult to injury, my local MP is one of the principal cheerleaders for Saudi interests in Parliament (even though he's openly gay and I don't think gay people get treated very well in that country)

I think Saudi Arabia was perhaps elected to the women's rights commission on account of the fact that it is the only country on earth that does not allow women to drive a car. The chauvinists in the UN must have found that intriguing and determined that Saudi Arabia had a lot to teach the world on women's rights even if feminists disagree. Could this be part of a deep rooted chauvinist conspiracy worldwide to enslave and disempower women by duplicating the saudi model all over the world !

All true but they have the oil. So we all pretend that we don't see what goes on there.

^I think psymon's question was more along the lines of "female leaders who are actually influential on a larger scale"

and while it's nice that Liberia and Trinidad&Tobago have women in such important positions, are they really that important outside their countries?
I mean, Croatia has a female president too, but internationally she's not that big of a deal.

Oh buut Piiiiaaaf, all countries matter.
    Yeaaah, but not really.

So we have Merkel and May.

Can any of you imagine what would happen if Saudi Arabia had a pussyhat protest?
