Today we were supposed to write 4 facts about ourselves in AP World History and one thing I wrote was that I was vegan. Then... people were like "What's vegan" and then I explained and they were like... "Huh?!?!?... you're weird" and then one went "So you don't eat hamburger"? "You don't drink milk"?... then they were all staring at me like "what the fuck was that"... and they were looking at me like I was a psycho or something...

So much diversity, so much ignorance...

My teacher did support me and he told them to "cry me a river, build a bridge. and get over it"... lmao... then people were staring at him like "huh"..

hahahah... then after that every sentence my teacher said, he kept saying "M'kay" and it was so funny because I was trying not to laugh... he said it like... 40 times.

You probably did make them uncomfortable... but don't sweat it. people don't like to get out of their comfort zones.

yeah...so they were uncomfortable? I doubt it, unless you told them what happend with that 'beloved hamburger' they eat. Even if you did, they don't have to agree with you.But the ignorance just proves that they're not ready for life yet.lol. BTW...cool teacher.

I just think it's strange that they don't understand the concept. Last year someone asked me what I was having for lunch and I said it was a tofu stir fry and they knew I was a vegan and they said "But tofu is made of meat"...

But that's the thing about this area. There's hardly any diversity :p Go to Florida or California... There are people of all races and religions... that largely has to do with part of it. There is also a much higher population and more people immigrate to the two states than any other states. But you have two of most liberally accepting and diverse states there are there. Somewhere where homosexuality etc. is accepted... all religions and denominatuions are accepted, and there's a wide range of income. If you were to try and measure it by central tendancies, the average would be way out of line. Median income would be most accurate, when around here, averages would be. There's organic food everywhere and multi-national foods and restaurants are all over around there. The price of land is higher. Incomes are higher. Schools are better.

You take account of someone living in rural Virginia. I bet someone who has lived in L.A. or Miami their entire life would be shocked.

That's one reason a lot of people don't understand diversity... they don't know what "pro-choice" really means, they are mis-informed of politics, most people are southern baptist (not that there's anything bad about it, we've all got out freedom of religion... and it's great), they don't have very good educations, they're so... it's hard to describe or explain if you don't live in a place like I do and you don't take it in the same way. This place is a foreign country compared to a state like Florida/California or even any big city up north. All of this is mainly why people view things differently such as vegetarianism/veganism in this area.

The south is full of weird shit. It's not very complex, but it's still weird shit. I've lived here for over half my life though. I can tell you one thing, if you had a tractor pull and a pig pickin' in Central Park, I bet news crews would be there in a heartbeat and the entire city would be thinking "WTF"?!?!?

    ROFLMAO.

so true...I went veg in Texas at 13.
as for the speech, don't sweat the a******* who think that same is good.
The Wal-Marting of America ain't where it's at, baby.

Seriously, maybe in the next few years some of what you said will echo in the girl who wants to shed some pounds (hey any reason to get veg*ans) or the girl who reads about vegetarian athletes while training for cross-country. Or the boy who notices he has breasts...due to meat hormones?... hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

umm..i'd say i would have to disagree with your whole concept of diversity in florida. like in ap english the other day some girl found out i was a veggie and she acted like i had just slapped her in the face wtf? i was in boone nc this summer...now thats a diverse place..there were so many hippies it was awesome. they also had good vegetarian options at every restaurant. i was amazed.

Well, there will always be people like that. But this wasn't just one person. This was everyone in the room. I've only ran into about a handful of people who were like "Ooh... vegans... I've heard of that... that's cool, tell me more"... most are like "WTF??? Haven't you died yet"

If that is all it takes to make them uncomfortable, they're really, really going to hate life after high school.
