Well many people who want to get somewhere in life will go to college first

Some that don't may get where they are going too, though a higher percentage will not

all this whining about the system etc is just sounding pretty sad, you are all lucky to even have the option

Lol. I don't think so. My English Teacher last year, Mrs. McGee, was fucking goregous. One of the prettiest people I have ever met. She was very inspirational. She got me writing in the first place.
Not sex stories though!! She got me into Shakespearean writing.

Plus, I think I would be a pretty kick ass art teacher. I would get into like dozens of topics and mediums to use.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was to do with car computer systems or something fancy like that. One of the auto parts stores in town won't hire anyone without that specific certification. The dudes there would shit a brick if Daniel came to work for them, but he can't yet because he doesn't have his certificate. He was the best parts guy around, hands down, but O'Reilly's really fucked him around at a bad time. There are still other jobs that he could have and he has one waiting on him, but the lack of transportation fucks us over. I'm just fortunate that I live within reasonable walking distance of my place of employment and have my parents who give me rides just so they can see me more often, lol.

if he looks around a bit, I think there is probably a way to get a government check to pay for the certification. If you have a good enough case, you would be surprised to see how much money the man is willing to fork over for individual education.

i agree that college is overrated. i think it's great for the people who want those degrees, and to do the things that require degrees.

but in my experience, most of the jobs that require college degrees are boring as hell, and very stressful. the ones that don't are much more fun, from what i've seen. also, i think the majority of people don't really know what they want to do in life until after they get out of college and experience the real world. so why not just start out that way and then decide if you need a college degree to enjoy life?

why not try to improve something if you can?

if i see something wrong with something, the LAST thing i am going to do is ignore it. sorry if it bothers you that i'm not content to sit around accept it :)

i have been lucky enough to have an enjoyable college experience - not too much money, great teachers and fascinating subjects. it is great in some ways, and very wrong in others.

yes, i am lucky - i have the resources and grades to go to nearly any school in the country. however, i chose not to, because i have other goals and am generally not a fan of the system how it is.

Do what you want. I see nothing wrong with having the option out there to go to college if you want to.

Be pissed off if that's what you feel, it doesn't matter. Nothing you could say would bother me.

Actually you are right, lets abolish colleges so there are no more doctors, engineers, scientists...

i'm not saying we should abolish college at ALL - i just think the entire education system needs a facelift. cheaper, better education. but what is the government spending money on? war. capitalism. it's shitty.

Well in certain cases, say if your into Surgery, Its understandable to spend years in school. Even after earning a PhD, the best doctors will stay in school for almost 10 years specializing in what they do.

My best buddies mom is a hand surgeon, and she spent a good 10+ years in school, while raising children, while her husband was on assignment in the middle east.. and now shes the top hand surgeon in central texas. it just goes to show, if your willing to dedicate yourself for the sake of others, there are benefits to college.

but fuck, i just do graphic art and 3d animation. I don't need to spend years in school doing that.

Here is why you do...this country is flooding beyond control with people who want to be graphic designers, to actually get your foot in the door they are going to pay attention to those who got into, and graduated, from the better graphic design programs. Fair or not, you would have to get lucky to land a job like that based purely on your skill, not that it couldn't happen, but it makes it much more difficult

Here there is a community college right downt hte street that is decent and costs something like $16 per credit hour. Its not the best school,, but people who are older etc do graduate from there and get the better job they wanted.

I can understand a little of what zilla is saying about the overhaul, but think that would be most achievable by establishing more grants to help those who can't afford it go, at least in the short term, because i can tell you the US will never cut back on war and defense spending within the forseeable future

Beyond that, I know some of you are massage therapists, pharmacy techs etc....while you didn't attend a 4 year college, you still had to go to school for maybe 1 to 2 years to be qualified for those jobs

you're right. we do need more grants, and more liberal arts institutions for lower-income people. all i'm saying is that our current system of education is elitist and narrow. you can't agree on that?

People who are able to raise a family and juggle being a doctor at the same time are incredibly amazing people. My ex-boyfriend's dad is the one of the lead specialists in infectious diseases in this area (I love it, because he's kind of like House. He's not a dickhead, though, just smart as hell) and he was such a great dad at the same time. It amazed me that he had the time and energy to juggle both.

yea, thats the way to do it. but hell man, i'm talking about a bit of reform.
You think its flooded with graphics designers, but with the internet boom, there really is an endless supply of work at hand. all you have to do is get in touch with the people that are willing to pay for the job. thats where people who are in my situation have trouble getting their foot in the door.

Look around you when you go out in the city, walk into stores, browse the web. There is an endless call for designers.

Well I don't know, Harvard and Princeton are narrow and elitist, but where I went at a state school was less so. I think there are many options:trade schools, community colleges, etc that are more specialized and are pretty down to earth...though definitely narrow

When it comes down to it though, like or not, there is competition in life, and people who get the best education possible are going to win those battles, the ones that are involved in being hired somewhere...

that being said, if you are creative, you can start your own business without even a high school diploma. It all matters what you want to do.

personally i wanted sort of a general education, so I enjoyed some of these classes that you guys would make fun of.
