I saw Tron in theater in 1982 and at the time it was totally unique and the first computer graphic illustrated movie. It was WOW! to some of us.

I just got the 20-year anniversary 2-disc DVD set to see it again. Remember (well for some of you reading this you weren't there :p) how limited computers were in '82. That is why this fiction was so advanced. In the features disc, I found out how hand-made the movie really was, very little of the special effects close-up was done on computers - it was masking and matting and all the old film tricks.

I was also reminded recently at the movies with trailers that the sequel Tron: Legacy comes out in December of this year. That is partly why I got the DVD. Normally I don't care for sequels but this one like the predecessor movie may be quite unique - and the CGI will undoubtedly all be done by C this time.

Here's what Wikipedia has to say about the new movie:

Tron: Legacy is an upcoming, December 2010 science fiction film.

It is a sequel to the 1982 Academy Award-nominated film Tron. Joseph Kosinski makes his feature film directorial debut with Tron: Legacy, while the previous film director, Steven Lisberger, returns as a producer. Jeff Bridges reprises his role as Kevin Flynn, and Bruce Boxleitner his roles as Alan Bradley and Tron, while Garrett Hedlund portrays Flynn's now-adult son, Sam. The other cast members include Olivia Wilde, Beau Garrett, Michael Sheen and John Hurt. At over twenty-eight years, this film marks the longest gap between a live-action film and its theatrical sequel in Hollywood history.

    Premise
According to a Disney press release, the storyline for the film is:

Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce Programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidante (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.

    Disney!?!?!?!aaargh disney needs to stop

The original tron is amazingly amazing and brings up issues that are very fascinating and still a possibility in real life. Disney better not fuck this up. if they are gonna make movies like this they need to remove the stick from their asses that prevents them from cussing or nudity or bad ideas. Aparently disney isnt just for kids anymore and they should provide content that fits with such an idea.

Oh, and a good movie that goes side by side with the original Tron is "Logan's Run"

You do know that Disney did the original Tron?

They pretty much did the financing and distribution and let the artists do the art. Steve Lisberger, who pretty much created and directed the original Tron is producer on this one, so we will hope that he keeps the standards of the original.

There used to be a video came that came out a couple years after the movie (Game parlour thing, not the console variety), that was fucking cool.

Had the frisbee things and the removeable rings like the scene in the movie, and it was made with a second screen in front of the video display so it looked 3D

Cant remember what it was called, but I was heavily addicted for a while, used to take the 1/2 train trip into the city just for that
