:daisy: Hello. ^__^ I am hoping to visit California pretty soon. I will be seeing friends in Santa Maria and Simi Valley, and then visiting San Francisco (incl. Haight Ashbury) and Los Angeles most likely on my own. Does anyone have any suggestions for cool hippie places I must see or things I must do? I am interested in almost everything and love adventure and getting into trouble. 0:)

    Thanks for the help! :bandana:

Well there is so much to do!!!

In SF, you must go to Hippy Hill and smoke a fatty in the park, after walking down the Haight. Be sure to take a pic of the clock at the corner or Ashbury at 4:20. The Fillmore is still there, still offering music. Lots of expensive food to eat, lots of other really good food everywhere...lots of variety if you stay away from tourist traps.

West of Santa Maria is Surf, California where you can walk for miles and maybe see a rocket launch from Vandenburg...

I know you will have a great trip, but trouble is all to easy to find :)

Venice Beach when you're in LA.. I used to go to a drum circle Sunday nights..not sure if that still goes on...
Incense, sage, tye dye, crystals, and bongs galore on the board walk..

    HI,

    the_doors_of_perception

Please realize that nothing is the same as the wonderful olden dayz. There is NO Scene anywhere, that you can could on tripping into. You must look for your own Majic. Now a dayz

Go and be the seeker. Seek adventure.
    Advice from a friend. Don't catch A.I.D.s
    And have a wonderful time.

In L.A. check Sunset around Melrose or La Cieniga just to feel the Hollywood scene. Ask the LOCALS. What's UP. Hang out with them.
To the BEACH. Santa Monica and just south is Venice Beach. Avoid the generic. Look for your type of people and ASK THEM. Hang with Them. Be in their trip.

If you go South, then go to Laguna Beach and Balboa island. Again! Avoid the generic scene. Look for your type of people and ASK THEM where it's at. Note that this is hard ass Right wing Turf. Inland is all GANGS.

Just North of Santa Monica is Malibu. Suggest driving up the entire coastline all the way to San Francisco. Find a café in Malibu. Or restaurant or bar just to get a taste of the LOCALS. Just to get the FEEL.

Venture coast is pretty and worth a stop at the beach. Then up into Santa Barbara. (RICH) Ask the LOCALS. Pretty Beach.
NOTE: All of the ocean water in California is Freezing. It all comes down from Alaska. YIKES! August is the best time.

San Simian to BIG SUR. Big Sur is about 10 miles of coast. Drive up and back. Enjoy it while you GOT IT. When you are in the mists of splendid, why drive out of it.
Again. Find some cool LOCALS and ask them about how to Live and what's UP.

Big Sur. Don't leave. Next is Carmel. Just before Carmel is a State Beach on your Left. This place is so unique. This is where Robert Louis Stevenson invisioned his novel Treasure Island. Really. It's beautiful. Don't LEAVE here until you have seen some sea otters. They are unbelievable! You have not lived until you've seen these.

Check out Carmel. Ask some LOCALS.

MUST the 14 mile drive, the golf course at Pebble Beach. Ask some LOCALS,

Fishermen's Wharf in Monterey, and the World Famous Aquarium. Cannery Row. John Stienbeck! Ask some LOCALS.

North to Soquel! (Winerys), and Santa Cruz . But on the way beaches on the left and farms, this in the Worlds entire supply of Artichokes Right Here. Stop and check it. Anyone Fool hurry.

then North to Soquel! (Winerys), and Santa Cruz. This is well worth sniffing around. Soquel is cute. Santa Cruz has every type from surfs to vegans to rastas to real hippies. All types.
    Ask the LOCALS.

Up the mountains from Santa Cruz is Redwoods like Ben Lomond and other small towns. Worth a side trip. Look for hippies there. Ask them about what the life style is there.
    Ask the LOCALS.

Back on the coast and just up the coast there is Bonni Dune. A small enclave.
    Ask the LOCALS.

    Further is awesome beaches.
    Ask the LOCALS.

Half Moon Bay. Drive into the Yatch Harbor. Eat at the Local Bar there. Ask the LOCALS.

Montara. Beautiful. Well worth a walk on the beach.
Ask the LOCALS. Just beyond that is the Cliffs at Devel's Side! It's a nude Beach!

    Pacifica, Daly city, San Francisco.

The Beach in San Francisco. Ask the LOCALS. Fort Funston. Dunes to the north. Then Golden gate park on the Right with Dutch Wind Mills. And Ocean Beach on your LEFT. Walk on the beach.
NOTE: Golden Gate Park takes you inland to the Haight Ashbury. The neighborhood is beat. Meaning not good.

If you go a few blocks north STOP at the Cliff House. At the very lease see the view. AND a must is the Camera Obscura. DO THIS! It's behind the building.
Just north of the Cliff House is the old Victorian Baths. Different parking lot. STOP. Take the hike. go through the CAVE. Check out the crazy cliff and surf.
A block beyond take a Left. Go and check the look out at Lands End. See the ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge.

    Do the city.
    Ask the LOCALS.

    Have fun.

    Ken

You'll probably find Haight Ashbury a disappointment. I did when I moved out here. Come over to Berkeley and check out Telegraph it is a lot more real. The Haight is like a shopping mall with dope dealers. The Mission in SF is pretty cool and funky in a good way. Drop me a PM I'll gladly meet up.

I hope they come back and read all of this.

If you do, I say go hang out with Reverend J. He's cool. And Berkeley is FUN and cool.

If I were looking for kicks in San Francisco I would be hanging out in North Beach and just south of Columbus and Broadway especially. Just beyond Chinatown.

The old Beat Generation area. Bars and Live Blues bands. People. Scene.

And I'd go the Berkeley too.

    Berkeley?

    Because it's there.

It's a huge university scene and Telegraph Avenue is still pretty cool today and the Haight-Ashbury is not. Lots of head space and brain and cutting edge and avant-gard people and young pretty faces and bodies. What's not to love? LOL

    Things are happening there.

The Haight-Ashbury is now just a very rich neighborhood with absolutely nothing going on and NO Freaks.

    Kinda like that.

Well, I don't know that place at all. So I was actually asking why it is still cool today exactly. But you explained it in your last post a little :)

    Cool. I'm glad.

I'm all about were the people and the stuff is going on. So very many people think that if only they could see the Haight-Ashbury that it would all be so cool and groovy. There is no place left like that, anymore. If there was then I would be living there right now.

I was the very last hippie to give up on San Francisco and to move out, back in 1998. LOL

    Gypsy Liveaboard,

Love your cat. Does it know how to swim? Just wondering.

Do you and you Husband anchor out? Because the pictures don't look like you are in a slip or dock.

Do you two take her out, very much? Get in the WIND? Most folks who live aboard don't because it's a big job to secure everything before getting underway.

I used to sail with a friend who had a Soling in Sausalito, a long time ago. I miss it and would love to get out again. Can I dance on the ocean with he and you?
    For real.
