Ex-Phish frontman hit with drug charges

WHITEHALL, New York (AP) -- Guitarist Trey Anastasio was accused of driving under the influence of drugs in an upstate New York town near the Vermont border early Friday, according to reports.

The former Phish frontman was pulled over by an officer who saw his car failing to keep to right side of the road at about 3:30 a.m., Whitehall village police said.

A search turned up quantities of the painkillers hydrocodone and Percocet, as well as the anti-anxiety drug Xanax, that had been prescribed for someone else, police said.

Anastasio, who was driving with a suspended New York license, was charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and driving while intoxicated-drugs, police said. He was released and scheduled for a court appearance at a later date.

Anastasio lives in Vermont and has been performing solo since Phish broke up in 2004.

Haha, I can second that, but I still love it. He'll repeat the same little trill or tacet over and over, but he often makes up for it in the end. It's just something you're supposed to hear live.

Then again... I could easily say that David Gilmour has weak screechy tone, Eric Clapton is losing his touch, and Carlos Santana is becoming a corporate whore with his shoe company... I could even say Jerry Garcia's signature triplets and quadruplets get annoying sometimes.

The sole person I don't think I could ever disrespect would be Duane Allman, but he died in '71. He's just hollow ground to me, along with Barry. Buddy Guy, BB King, Albert King, Stevie Ray, etc.

well, I think that Gilmour is a great rock player and is really refrshing to hear. I think claptons good but I never saw the big deal. Santanas shoe has nothing to do with his guitar playing. But I do feel over the past few years he's using the same licks over and over again. And the only things that have impressed me about garcia is his acousic arragnements.

And for the other guys posted on the bottem I agree with you. Quite good and un-boring. Except stevie ray. I think he's a good player and all but he just never really clicked on me on a huge level.

Mr. Anastasio released a brief statement late Friday afternoon: "I feel terrible about what happened last night, and I am deeply sorry for any embarrassment I have caused my friends, family, and fans."

He should have apologized to his band mates also. Later in the day they issued a statement of their own, announcing that Mr. Anastasio had been asked to leave the group, which he had founded in 1983 and had disbanded two years ago.

"We could no longer tolerate Trey's dependence on controlled substances," said the statement, which was signed by Page McConnell, keyboards and vocals, Mike Gordon, bass guitar and vocals, and Jon Fishman, percussion, vacuum cleaner, and vocals.

"His excessive use of hard drugs not only caused the break-up of the band but also prevented any hope of a reunion, a hope that so many of our fans had clung to for the last two years. For their sakes as well as our own it is necessary to find a replacement for Trey and to start touring again in the spring."

Among those mentioned as potential replacements for Mr. Anastasio are Warren Haynes of Government Mule, Patchen Montgomery of Strangefolk, and Billy Nershi of the String Cheese Incident.

I know man.... I'm freaking out too.

I don't think Billy would go for that, though... he wants to stay small and stick to the grass. I'd love to see what he can do.

Warren is the shit and one of my biggest influences, so I'd love to see what all he can do.

Strangefolk isn't as well known... I don't know... would the jam community really be ready to give patchen a shot?
