who agrees with me, that this man is the most talented and creative musician on the face of the planet?
Hmm... well, there are a lot of people that are so damn talented and amazing. I have to say Trey is in there as the most abstract. Though, his ego got the best of him, at times. Usually with Trey and Phish's stuff, most people seem to either love it or hate it. Then there's the kind that may like only one song, it seems... I'm probably going to Richmond to see Trey on April 26th... Dark Star Orchestra in Norfolk, VA at the Norva on 4/20.
You would probably look at them/him differently if you've been to a Phish concert. I have, but I started digging deeper into them and their bootlegs since Coventry and the break up... I really rely on their music. It gives me a boost of joy when I need it, if I feel down or depressed, usually.
Someone said that Lenny Kravitz was the next incarnation of Hendrix because they saw Lenny in concert... Just because you've seen them and you liked them, doesn't mean they're anywhere near the greatest... Phish has absolutely nothing on The Grateful Dead. Lose personal biases before you make outlandish claims like "Trey Anastasio is the god of music"... I've come to terms with the fact that Lennon/McCartney weren't all that great when it came to writing
I think Trey is an incredible musician. He has the talent and confidence of someone who has done and will continue to do great things in the music world. There is a little sprak inside him that sets him apart, that makes him so great, it attracts people like a light attracts moths. I have seen him in concert and his talent is wonderful. But do I like Phish or Trey in general? No. I don't like his attitude off stage and and just don't dig some of the grooves. It's my own personal opinion. I don't get into Phish. I also don't think trey is the BEST musician on the planet. He is to those of you out there who "get" that spark I was talking about. But there are many others who would blow him away in another's opinion. Everyone has different musical taste It's just not my cup of tea.
I know... but then again, Lenny is a commercial p.o.s. compared to most people. I don't think they're the greatest because there is no greatest... The Grateful Dead is gone and so is Phish. I like Phish as a whole more than I like Trey... Lennon/McCartney weren't all that great... they were just easy to listen to and understand. John was quite the asshole himself and Paul has a huge ego, Ringo didn't do a whole hell of a lot, and George seemed to have it the hardest with Eric Clapton taking Linda but he seemed to be the most balanced. But I like Trey because he's a lot better than a lot of today's musicians and I think Phish is one of the biggest contemporary/modern jam band icons. They also brighten my mood quite a bit. But for now, I feel like String Cheese, Keller Williams, and moe. are going to get a big boost of fans this year from the Phish crowd. Trey's shows so far are already almost sold out.
Is it wrong to not want the phish kids to invade the shows I want to go to (obviously moe.)? I always welcome people to shows, but I have this awful feeling in my stomach that if moe. blew up and went 1/2 mainstream like Phish and Dave Matthews, it wouldn't be the same. I like it small, almost like a family. I love the lots for moe. shows. People are just so friendly, no one is that rowdy, there's hardly any frat kids there, it's so nice. I want it to stay the same. Is that worng of me?
The grateful dead influenced the format of phish's concerts, 2 full sets, lots of improvization and a completely different setlist from night to night, that's pretty much it. Musically, I'd say they owe a lot more to Frank Zappa, George Clinton and P-Funk, The Talking Heads, and Jazz.
Those are your personal feelings and opinions. I know what you mean. I've been to moe. shows and have witnessed them on a radio show. It was fairly intimate at the shows I've been to. But, I expect there's going to be a larger fan boost in other bands being followed, this year, due to the Phish breakup. I've been reading and posting on forums and that's been kind of a mystery on the Keller Williams forum and a few other jam band forums.
trey is sick nasty at the guitar. For all you haters listen to any live phish cd and you will see he is fucking amazing. you dont have to like his style or the way he plays but that doesnt mean he isnt one of the greatest guitarists of our generation. He can do things with those fingers that most of us can not even dream of (especiall around '94).
i agree with drbeaker. as far as trey being the most talented and creative musician on the face of the planet, i think you would have to say living for it to be anywhere near accurate(sp). from what i have seen of trey (not too much) zappa own his soul creatively(again sp).
Nope, sorry, I don't agree. I don't mean to say that he's not talented or creative, but "on the face of the planet"? Come on...
He is a very talented musician, but I think he lacks one basic quality - the ability to play with others and listen to other musical voices. His ego is quite the turn off. After watching a slow demise in the quality of their live performances starting back in 95' I just kind of lost a lot of respect for the man. It's not like I got sick of Phish, its just that their energy on stage together started to suffer dramatically as Trey's ego grew. I just don't think he 'has it' like he did ten years ago. I don't think he realizes the importance of the other musicians surrounding him anymore and that if he played truly with people instead of along side them, his music would return to the levels he once played at.
*stands up and claps for DHS's post* that's a very accurate way of describing Trey. I never could have put it so gently, yet truthful. and thank you, Orsino for not making me feel like a bad person. It's not as if I don't want any phish kids to come and experience moe., I just don't want them blown up, facing the same problems Phish did when thier music was accpeted more in the mainstream media. I don't want anyone getting an ego. I don't want to filter my way through huge crowds of fans and party goers and frat boys and drug dealers and cops and all that jazz that comes with a popular band. I want to run around freely like I always do. I don't like change. I know it neccessary, but it don't like it
I know. It's sad when people are inconsiderate about others at shows. It's kind of like the Dave Matthews crowd. My dad used to take me to shows back in the early nineties where it was amazingly cheap since he wasn't so big back then. We'd go to Virginia Beach or near DC sometimes and see him and I've seen him with Tim Reynolds, but the audience has just gotten... egh. It's not like I have anything against the people personally. I just understand where you're coming from that since a lot of people don't think. They bring too many cops around and they don't know how to tone it down. One reason why I didn't even go to the last phish show at Hampton Coliseum. And I was reading about that band Phix (the phish tribute/cover band) who went to Coventry and they said they were sleeping on the highway and the people behind them just passed them and drove around the people who had been waiting longer. It's kind of like that, metaphorically... and it's really sad when you grow up with a band and then see them get torn apart like that. I've seen Phish more times than any other band and my love for them really didn't hit/grow until Coventry and I realized what everything led to. It's kind of tragic. Truly, I don't care who Trey is offstage. I mean, I know he was one of the main reasons that it led to this, but I live for the music. I don't like taking it personally against the musicians.
