My partner and I are planning a trip to Europe next summer...hopefully we can scrimp and save enough money for a three month trip. I'm hoping to get in contact with some people who live throughout Europe for travel tips and advice. Thank you!
Cheapest way to travel is to hitch or get an interrail ticket. It's a ticket which lets you go anywhere by train in Europe for one month. Here's a link which might help. http://www.raileurope.co.uk/inter-rail/?source=re_homepage_topNav_IR
WE'd like to go to as many countries as possible. Ireland, Great Britain, Netherlands, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Romania, Russia, Norway, Sweden, and Findland, Poland...we're spending a few months out there to see as many sites as possible
Try getting the Lonely Planet - Europe on a showstring book, that should be really helpful to have. Also you seem to want to cover a lot of countries some which are very expensive. Oslo in Norway for example is now more expensive than Toyko and all the major capitals in Europe will be very expensive. Get a map of Europe and figure out where exactly you want to go, because some places like Romania and Russia are a bit out of the way and you'll probably have to fly there. If you wanna stay for longer without spending money check out http://www.helpx.net and http://www.wwoof.org They are a real good experience aswell as being a cheap way to travel. Om Shanti
I recommend you see Amsterdam if your going to Europe, (see my sig) Of course London is a must, but be aware, it's the most expensive city in Europe. Spain is great too and it's easy to catch a ferry over from Spain to Morocco, I highly recommend doing it. anyway, enjoy
No it's not, not by a long shot http://money.cnn.com/2006/01/31/real_estate/world_cities_most_expensive/
But wouldnt it be better to go see less places and spend more time in them? Otherwise youll just be rushing from place to place without really taking it all in?
Well Spacer, indeed I stand corrected. Although it does seem odd. The British pound is stronger than than Euro so people coming to London lose out in the exchange, but us Brits gain when we go to Europe.
New York was only 23rd or 27th, so it got hammered due to the weak dollar. Also most of the European countries in the top 10 bar France don't have the Euro afaik. Dublin was 16th, I thought it'd be higher as it's fucking crazy expensive at this stage.
No wonder there are so many Portugese, Polish and other similar underdeveloped countries wanting to come and live and work in the UK, there are simply hundreds of them in my local town. They earn a months wage in their own country in a week here, so they tell me. Anyway, sorry for hijacking the thread and going off topic please carry on with the Europe stuff.
As far as I know, InterRail isn't available to Americans. You need to have a European address. Eurail is the way to go. I found that staying in smaller towns and less touristy areas made my money go further. It also gave me more of a chance to meet local people rather than tourists.
.... .. well i have to be careful what i say here .. interail .. i know from first hand exp that its possible to get interail for free and have travel throughout europe for as long as you want .. as far as having an european address .. not a problem at all .. the good thing about the system is it is a system and has rules which they make .. this allows us to use the loopholkes they provide by listing these rules etc .. if you get my meaning ... you can buy an interail in spain for example and use it around the rest of europe .. .. i also agree with the comments that 3 months isnt enough to go to the places you want to go to .. you have a lifetime.. and it has already begun, you dont have to do it all in three months even if you could. .. i have been on the road in one way or another for 10 years now ... and i have visited many countries but ony passing through on my way to places where i consider i have lived .. and the requirement for that is at least three months, preferably 6 beofore you begin to get a feel for the culture, language and more importantly establish those contacts which will allow you to go back anytime in your life to stay with those wonderful people you met and lived with as opposed to met and had a coffee with. .. i caome across many people on the road who do rush from one place to another and they dont stick in my mind and usually they seem stressed and are ticking of places on a map as have been to and seem .. no .. you miss so so so much. choose one country only and do that .. the poeple you meet there will open up your path to other places .. and make the transition to the next place much easier and more rewarding .. dont plan too much .. just do it lots of love
My partner and I plan on settling down after our trip to Europe. It's possible we may not get a chance to go to Europe again for a long while, if ever, so we want to see stuff we've dreamed of seeing in one trip...because who knows when, and if, we'll ever have the opportunity to do it again.
