I just had a bad tooth pulled out. It was a molar. Anyone else have teeth pulled out? I luckily never got any wisdom teeth in. Apparently people with no wisdom teeth are more evolved. :D

I could have gotten a root canal but that would have been very expensive. Besides giving birth, I'd have to say this was one of the most traumatizing experiences for me. It was absolutely terrifying and so uncomfortable. Having someone tug and break away at your tooth is not cool.

It was also kind of demented given that there was a TV show on with clips of people from the 50's dancing to extremely happy music... I was clenching to the chair the whole time and I was so light headed when I sat up.

I'm in a lot of pain now and feeling nauseous. I need a hug. :(

Last time I had a tooth pulled I was like 12 or 13, and they gave me laughing gas, so the experience was a hoot to me. I don't remember feeling much pain afterwards either.

Did you just go in there and get it pulled without any anesthesia or what did they give you? Anyways...that sucks. Hope you feel better soon.

I have had just one wisdom tooth. I don't need to get it removed though and it doesn't bother me. It's compacted-just barely out of the gum and doesn't bother me.

I have gotten two teeth pulled at once. I was 8 or 9 years old I think. It was a funny experience for me though because I had a nitrous mask. All I remember was putting the mask on and the music was on and they were talking to me and then I woke up. No pain or anything- totally wasn't conscious for it. I was pretty loopy afterwards and remember (very specifically because everything seemed very funny when I woke up) having to wait an hour or two before I could go swimming afterwards.

Anyways in order for me to get a tooth pulled they'd have to knock me out in some way.

I was awake. No anesthesia since I'm pregnant.. and I guess no novocaine. They did use something milder to numb me up but I'm not sure what it was called.

Probably a topical anesthetic like bezocaine or lidocaine.

Yea. Last time I was pregnant I was thinking about getting that impacted wisdom tooth removed (decided not to bother w it)....and I had to ask my OB if I was allowed any anesthesia and/or painkillers. Doc told me vicodin would be okay (although I know that's not best thing to take when preg) and also that local anesthesia is okay (novocaine) but not general anesthesia (knocked out). Anyways I didn't bother with it but I remember that's what my OB at the time would okay if I was going to. Doctors are all probably different w what they okay though. That's good you got to use SOMETHING kinda similar to novocaine at least.

I had a molar pulled when I was 12 or so and it really traumatized me. It was one of the worst pains I've felt in my life and I bled for like two hours.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out when I was 18 but that was no big deal. I was unconscious for it and they gave me Demerol lol. Plus my face didn't swell or bruise at all.

Yep, think it might have been one of those.

Guess I was a little confused about the anesthesia. Yeah, thought that put you to sleep. So novocaine is considered an anesthetic then? Well you just answered that since you said there's local and general.. So I had local anesthesia.

But now I'm wondering, is it common for people to be put under general anesthetic for extraction? Is that what most people do?

    Yea, novocaine=local anesthetic
While general is....being knocked out totally.

The thought of being knocked out for a surgery really terrifies me too.. I'm not sure I would even opt for that if I had the option.

I don't think if the tooth is up and out (you know, a normal tooth) that they often knock people out.

The doctor who was gonna take out my wisdom tooth wanted to knock me out because my wisdom tooth was still under the gum-just barely peeking out of my gums-and wasn't gonna come out. So it would be much more time consuming and painful to remove.

Usually a general anesthetic like nitrous. They usually never put a person out completely for oral surgery unless it's like major, but some general anesthetic is used most of the time.

And yea I had signed all the papers (consent forms) for it and all... had it scheduled and then got pregnant. So I couldn't be knocked out. So I decided to wait. (and then changed mind all together over it.)

But regardless I had to sign many consents that basically it could kill me (being knocked out)..... and just all kinds of life threatening things that could happen. Kinda scary. That stuff is rare though. Very rare.... but still scary.

That was just totally un-natural, lol. Having a tooth pulled. How is a dentist able to pull teeth all day?... How can you do that to someone? My head hurts.
