I always thought if I ever got another dog, it would be a big bull dog.....or German Shepherd....but that is a long way off in the future....and probably bull dog, will be the one....some day. http://www.nbcnews.com/id/54233921/ns/local_news-new_york_ny/
I had a shepherd once, and he was the best dog. They are great companions and protective, too, if need be. ...smart, too...but bulls are so damn loveable. LOL
Bulldogs are high maintenance, and have a lot of health issues. The Breed is dependent on human involvement to survive. Most of them cannot breed or give birth naturally. They're cute and all but I'd never have one. My cousin used to breed English bulldogs as well as Bullmastiffs, so I've had a lot of experience with them. I for one am hoping that the efforts to recreate the original "Old English Bulldog" is successful. It really is sad what they've Done to the breed ever since bull baiting was banned.
Letlovin..., yes, I thought of that, too, and heard they can slobber and drool all over the place, too. LOL Pugs were bred, too, into an very unnatural state. They always have breathing problems, due to snouts too close to the face. german Shepherds are very close to their natural state.
I wonder why the NY favorites differ from the Nat'l favorites; and I wonder if any of the states fall in line exactly with the Nat'l favorites. I found the list with major cities: http://www.akc.org/reg/topdogsbycity.cfm?page=1
I'd love a golden retriever, but I live in an apartment so it's a little dog for me. I also don't like dealing with drool with big dogs.
When I was a kid we had a dachshund. As an adult I have only ever had mix breeds from the Humane Society. I would have to say they were/are the best for me.
That is very interesting, Aerianne, beloved moderator....It seems some dogs are repeated over and over again, though for top 3 spots. Had a chocolate lab, once, too, and they need alot of exercise and can be very hyper. Goldens are so laid back, and I hardly ever know when Sullivan here is ever around. I never knew a more laid back dog than him.
I'm glad to see German Shepherds coming back. "Everybody" had them when I was growing up. There are two that are walked by the same family in my neighborhood. Other than that, I don't know anyone who has one.
They may have declined in popularity due to a reputation for being violent or dangerous. In a quick search they are the 3rd most dangerous breed (ranked by severe bites and fatalities). The fact that any dog breed is dangerous is debatable. But that doesn't change public opinion.
Then there's the Caucasian Shepherd but he's on the Most Dangerous Dogs In The World List. http://www.dog-breeds-expert.com/Dangerous-Dog-Breeds.html
That second photo there of that Caucasian shepherd looks like the Tasmanian devil....LOL! Never heard of this breed....If you want to be protected, it is a good breed. I never quite trust a breed of dog that could kill me if he went insane, sick or something.....I threw my german shepherd down on the ground once and really tested him, and my trust level with him. I trusted him, but the thought was always in the back my mind...what if something goes screwy in this dog's head? As it turned out, I did not have him too long, as he kept smashing through the sunroom glass door windows every time he heard thunder when he was outside, and he cut himself the last time he did that. I miss him, though.
Oh, he didn't die doing that, but we did have to find another good home for him. I am no longer in that house, so glass window doors would no longer be a problem.
