All of a sudden, my five favourite female vocalists became clear in my head. This kinda thing usually requires lots of thought for me, but not this time...I wasn't even trying to establish the list! Those women are: 1. Fiona Apple 2. Bjork 3. Aretha Franklin 4. Janis Joplin 5. Sia Furler (Zero 7) Top five men I figure I should give a shot at, but already I know it's gonna be tricky... 1. Jeff Buckley 2. Paul McCartney 3. Jonsi Birgisson (Sigur Ros) 4. Tom Waits 5. Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) So who might yours be? Feel free to mix up the lists, male/female/whatever, like I say, I just had those five women in mind. I couldn't even attempt to narrow that ten to five!

Cheers...Good calls! Lennon almost made my number 2 spot, but after a bit of thought I realised I prefered Paul's 'perfect' vocals as opposed to John's slightly off vocals. Hendrix too actually, I considered, but he gets the number one spot for guitar. Not that that should hold him back, but it I think it made me slightly biased. Two people that I sadly had to leave out: Ella Fitzgerald and Lou Reed.
tricky one, I may keep coming back and changing my mind, but: WOMEN: (In no particular order) 1. Ani DiFranco 2. Sharon den Adel [Within Temptation] 3. Natascha Atlas [Transglobal Underground] 4. Ayumi Hamasaki 5. Dolores O'Riordan [The Cranberries] MALE: (In no particular order) 1. Maynard James Keenan [TOOL] 2. Layne Staley [Alice in Chains] 3. Peter Steele [Type O negative] 4. Roland Gift [Fine Young Cannibals] 5. Bryan Ferry [Roxy Music]
Good choices there folks... Females: Thea Gilmore Regina Spector Janis Jolin Emma Rugg Ella Fitzgerald Gonna also throw in... Aimie Mann, Shirley Manson (Garbage), Kylie Males: George Harrison Jim Morrison Jimmy Cliff Jarvis Cocker Damon Alburn Also gonna throw in... Jamie T, Lou Reed, David Bowie I couldn't leave those other folks out!!!!
This is just random, off the top of my head, as there's no way i could cut it down to five, but... Females: Tori Amos Vashti Bunyan Anneke Van Giersbergen Nina Simone Lisa Gerrard Males: Bruce Dickinson Nick Drake Louis Armstrong Johnny Morrow Dean Martin
Nick Drake doesn't make me miserable, but I do sometimes feel sad listening to him and thinking about how sad he was Poor fella. Anyway, I'm posting 'cause for some stupid reason I forgot to mention Beth Gibbons of Portishead. Sheesh!
axl rose bob dylan jimmy page alice cooper jimi hendrix janis joplin joan baez aretha franklin ella fitzgerald gwen stefani
Female: Patti Labelle Sandy Denny Janis Joplin Bjork Ella Fitzgerald Males Paul Rodgers Freddie Mercury Ben Ottwell Roland Orzabal Otis Redding
In no particular order and in terms of my preference not overall talent.... Maxi Jaz James Blunt Dido Sandy Denny Mark Chadwick
John Lennons got to be up there, his voice is so raw and passionate, and jim morrison such a great mundane voice! bjork's voice is amazing as well, and robert plant can't forget him....ummm can't think who else theres too many =)
