Who else thinks they are an incredibly overrated band? They have a few good songs I have to admit, but most of it is really boring. If they were so intellectual, they would use it to make music that isn't boring. Now I listen to a lot of music that most would consider to be boring, but its only because the riffs are repeated, and even then I can still listen to the song in entirety. Anyone else share my same opinions?
Most of the songs that get regular air time are pretty main stream. I like the stuff where he hardly sings. I think Maynard should have stuck with A Perfect Circle, TBH. Over rated? No? Over rated bands are like that emo crap.
have you heard the radio today? Thats bad music. Now, tool is not a bad band, just depends on taste. I personally think they are great, esp. for druggies. Nowadays its all about looks and shit, how they make the band appear and sound. They have no originality or talent. music today is a joke. It should be talent and creativity based.
I am just a worthless liar. I am just an imbecile. I will only complicate you. trust in me and fall as well. I will find a center in you. I will chew it up and leave. I will work to elevate you, just enough to bring you down.
Tool isn't a bad band by any means, but I really do not understand all the hype around them. They're not doing anything new or unique.
Yeah I can see where you are coming from saying they are not a bad band, because they aren't. They just make boring music. I think if they put their musical talent in something great and still use intelligence and originality I would like them. I personally find Maynard's worshippers to pretentious tools(pun lulz) and I find his voice really boring.
i don't think they are overrated, because i hardly know anybody that likes them (except my mom) and i don't really hear them played all that much on the radio.. i'd say they aren't a bad band, but i don't really dig that kinda music
They have a ridiculously big cult following... some people actually believe that there's a spirit in the drumset or other paranormal bullshit that Maynard invents in order to make a god out of himself.
I like them haha. Lateralus is my favorite album by them, and I personally think that it is pretty profound. The lyrics are really meaningful if you look at them. As for their intellectual stuff their music ties around spirituality completely. Their songs are almost like puzzles. With the Lateralus album, the puzzle starts with 'spirals' from the title track Lateralus, which is riddled with clues. Maynard starts the song with lyrics who's syllables follow the Fibonacci sequence (1 1 2 3 5 8 13 etc) which is 'the' spiral (phi and sacred geometry). There are lyrics saying " And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been. We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been. Spiral out. Keep going, going..." The drum beat in one part also matches the Fibonacci. You use this to start to rearrange the order of the tracks and long story short, you'll eventually get a seamless album that tells a different story, trying to explain there is more than our physical existence, which Maynard refers to as the "Holy Gift."
Really... I like tool alot... there are only a few songs I don't like too much. Alot of their older stuff is better, the crap you hear on the radio sucks generally but if you actually take the time to listen to some of their albums they're good.
Tool is my favorite band. I really dont think they are over rated, they are very creative and their lyrics can be pretty deep. I mean only Tool would think about taking a cookie recipie and making it sound evil and satanistic (for those of you who dont know i am refering to Dier Von Satan). I think they are very original. I must admit I wasnt too impressed with 10,000 days though. My favorite album is Aenima, by far. but hey thats just me.
They are intellectual with their puzzling lyrics, but what are lyrics? Just poetry, a story basically. Their music is like listening to spoken word with music behind it. Its not really that interesting. What also turns me off from them is that they have a sort of nu metal influence in some of their songs. As a true metalhead, I can't fucking stand nu-metal.
Lyrics are what Tool and APC are about. Tool was around way before nu-metal.... The big thing about maynard is he's song are almost always in complex metaphors. Some people understand them, others don't. If you actually understand the meaning of some of his songs you'd know he is a lyric genius. I think they'res a almost auroric "druggy/trippy" thing that comes along with some of his work. Idk, its kinda liek you'd have to experince what he's singing about to understand.
Finally other people think this, I've got so much shit in the past for saying Tool is overrated. There's nothing exciting about Tool and all their music seems to be one angry mood. While I won't disagree they're good muscians, being a good muscian doesn't mean you're going to make good songs. And serriously, what's the deal with Tool is the new Pink Floyd type of stuff.
Their lyrics are not intellectual... they are pseudo-intellectual. There is a big difference. Just because they base their lyrics on something else and have hidden messages or so doesn't mean that they are saying anything with them. Anyhow... yeah... some of their stuff is great, but... if you're gonna stick to modern bands in the genre... Porcupine Tree is a million times better.
I tried to get into them in high school and I couldn't. I think of Tool as one of those bands that people with questionable taste think of as 'good music'. they're definitly good musicians but I honestly couldn't give a fuck about that, they're still boring and overblown. maybe it's my problem and I'm missing something. maynard is predictable and takes himself way too seriously, and though I really appreaciate such revolutionary statements as "christianity is bad", I'd rather just listen to the Vaselines or something...
