So I've been really getting into his stuff lately is there anyone else who likes him, i know a lot of people who can't stand his voice or anything about his music but i think his voice is amazing and the way he can make anything in creation sound good with his music not to mention his lyrics are genius.

    haha, ok!
I'm just listening to Heartattack and Vine, great album!
"don't you know there ain't no devil, there's just god when he's drunk" always catches my attention haha, its actually a good way to see it.

He truly is a genius, a while ago, actually quite a while ago, I checked out Wild Years.
I didn't get too far because I was in one of my books make me sick phases i get after reading like five books at once, but it seemed like a good book.
Any chance you've read it? I don't remember it much, I was actually in the Library looking for it the other day but no luck and I didn't feel like checking the other one.
I remember it saying that people who'd know about him wont say what's true or not, thats pretty fucking cool haha.
I don't think i'd want to know, it'd take away from his character, just not knowing makes you question everything.

What would you say his best album is?
I was actually going to snatch a couple I haven't heard off a friend but forgot them at his house, always next time though.
I'm not sure what I'd say his best album that I've heard is.

aw man, i've never read any books on him, but i've seen him in oodles of movies! he's made tons of appearances on david letterman as well... i found them on the internet :)

hmmmm... i like: "mule variations"- it's so pretty and funky-i'm a sucker for his ballads and he has so many freaky-weird songs on it too; "raindogs"- amazingly sexy; "real gone"- i don't have this one memorized yet; "the black rider"- cause i think it's funny :) ; and "alice"- because it's just lovely.

i have had swordfishtrombones for a couple years now and i've never got around to listening to it.... i think i've heard it before (when i first started listening to tom waits), but i don't really remember it. i'll give it a whirl when i drive to va for thanksgiving (6 hrs in the car).

gosh, i love tom waits. he's one of the few honest singer-songwriters around anymore.

yeah, hes definitely one of the few who can still put soul into it.
I haven't really seen that many movies with him, though hes caught my eye by surprise a few times, I've also caught him on a few shows here and there, the other day I saw him on Conan.
Did you see Coffee and Cigarettes? I only watched that because of him, it took three times before i actually made it to his part, that also included Iggy Pop!

yeah, i did the same thing with coffee and cigarettes.... i found the part with him to be the best. it was actually funny :) the rest of the film was slow and kind of pretentious...

ooh, he's in .... um.... "down by law" with roberto whatsit... you know, from "life is beautiful", italian fellow... begnini? bernini? it's black and white and his music is the soundtrack (raindogs). he has a bunch of little roles.... i can't think good right now (yar), but he plays a homeless guy in a wheelchair in "the fisher king" (damn good movie) and he's a mad scientist in "mystery men" (damn stupid movie, but can be tolerated).

haha yeah, it was pretty funny, "The beauty of quitting is, now that I've quit, I can have one, 'cause I've quit." haha

haha Mystery men, I remember watching that not too long ago and saying tom out loud ...and being looked at weird by people who don't know his awesomeness. he also pops up once or twice in the outsiders i believe. I may have seen a few that you mentioned, i know i've seen a few movies with him in them, but can't remember what they were... guess that just means i'll have to watch em anyway! haha

That i've heard i'd have to say either rain dogs or heartattack and vine, mind you I don't have the best memory of what i've heard. Another point, you can't really just listen to one song or album and say you've heard the rest like some bands out there these days. I still haven't checked out Orphans, I heard good things about it though.

oohh... orphans was lovely (and long :) )... i need to get my friend to make me a copy. all of my musician friends (and boyfriend) adore tom waits. haha... my little sister loves him, too. she's such a smarty-pants :)

i'd have to say, one of my favorite songs by him is "take it with me".... it's one of the last songs on "mule variations" and it has some gorgeous piano. gahhh.... i looove that song! chokes me up, you know :)

Guess I'll have to check it out than (like I wasn't already going to) I've heard a few songs from it at a friends house, but I'm usually preoccupied when I'm there so I've never paid full attention. I know a few people who like him, just not the ones who'd normally watch mystery men.

Man, I bet I'd die if i got to see him live, he's great on CD, his stage performance is just awesome from what I've seen.

    I LOVE TOM WAITS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can never thank my uncle enough for getting me into his music. Already I have three of his albums: Real Gone, Blue Valentine and Mule Variations and I trully cannot find a song that I dont enjoy for one reason or another on the albums.

He sells his albums for the music, not the image and I find that to be so important with music.

As dollydagger just said. He is pure absolute genious!

The one I listen to most is Frank's Wild Years, a true classic.

He came over to London a few years ago - right in the middle of my trip to San Francisco, damn damn damn.
