In today's society, it seems.like there is always a divide, no matter if it's political, religious, racial, etc. I started this thread for you post what you think are good acts of tolerance, and how you think we should react to lack of tolerance and discrimination
I'll go first. I respect everyone's right to their opinion, even though I may not agree with them. I've seen too many friendships suffer over a divide of opinions, so I won't engage in argument over a difference of opinion. I agree to disagree. I do, however draw a line when someone is being a mean hateful asshole just for the sake of trying to make me favor their opinion.
That is an admirable trait. I will add later. I must tolerate my troops wanting to be fed at the moment.
Tolerance is one of the basics of the Hippy life style, thinking and daily life practice. It started way before the Hippies, Germans discovered the joys of living with nature and tolerance back in the 1800s and exported their health lifestyle to America. But that's another story... Tolerance is what keeps the world working. We all live here, we all need to tolerate other cultures, life styles, and ways of thinking. Doesn't mean we have to put up with intolerant dictators.
I think tolerance is of the utmost importance in particular when acclimating to other social climes. For instance, I grew up in a suburban neighborhood and moved to a neighborhood with significant Hispanic influence. There are things that are different in a Hispanic neighborhood; especially coming from the suburbs. I needed tolerance in a big way - like someone who needs a transplant... Anyway, tolerance can mean the difference between a happy life and being utterly miserable. I think it's really important especially to be very open to ideas and things about other cultures. I draw the line though when it comes to human rights. Say for example in one's culture there is a hierarchy that puts down an entire subset of society. That's hard for me to accept. So, like the caste system for instance. I have a hard time with that. The other example that gets thrown around a lot is FGM. I think it's abhorrent, and even though it's acceptable to some people in certain cultures I think it needs to stop happening.
it's always a good idea to take a tolerance break every once in a while. when if feels like you're not getting high anymore, just getting normal.
I think I need to define the meaning first. To me, it means to endure a thing, even if I disagree with it. It is about respecting other opinions and behaviors, even if I feel differently. I have many friends with different religious convictions, I never disrespect any of them, I just try to remember that some do not eat pork As for politics, I do debate, in the real world, never on a forum. I also think facial expressions play a major part in the real world, something that is impossible on any forum. I respect that the Mods here tolerate a lot of stuff - Not easy for them
Respect and tolerance go hand in hand. If i see somebody who has only just arrived i am full of respect of them. I will tolerate them.
