Yes May 12th 2020 is International Nurses Day, and of course I do not have to say to you just how valuable to us ALL our Nurses and carers and similar health workers are.

Let's hear it for them here on Hip Forum!

INTERNATIONAL Nurses Day is an annual celebration of the crucial work nurses do around the world.
It is especially important in 2020 as they continue to lead the frontline charge against the coronavirus pandemic.

    What is International Nurses Day?
The annual event, which was first marked in 1965, was created by the International Council of Nurses to mark the hard work of nursing staff around the world.

Since January 1974, the global celebrations are traditionally held on May 12.

This is to mark the anniversary of the birth of nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale.

Each year in the UK, a service is held in Westminster Abbey in London.

I see 20 people have looked at this thread, and as of now nobody has posted anything at all in respect of our Nurses and Carers and the like.
    This on International Nurse Day.
    Very disappointing indeed. :frowning:

I was thinking about this the other day... Nurses and really all medical professionals right now are truly on the front lines of a war. This relentless pandemic has them working harder than anyone. They are the ones who are really there for us when we need them. I have the utmost appreciation for them and their work and regard them with the same reverence and esteem reserved for veterans.

A nurse tried to seduce me on a Saturday afternoon after I'd been playing sport. I boarded with her family and she and I were the only ones at home at the time. I was thirteen and her name was Jeanette and I think she was twenty something. At the time I was too dumb to let it happen.:flushed::blush:

The way the UK worships the NHS is cultish and disturbing. I got my first view of this during the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony.

Well I think the United Kingdom NHS is well worth worshiping, and it doesn't really matter what label you try to stick on it, I am proud of OUR NHS.
This because it's nurses and its doctors and it's surgeons and all staff are in fact all wonderful.
It is the Government who are letting them down at the moment it is sad to say.

Where you live is your health service worth worshiping then?

Where I live, and everyplace else, there is no governing monopoly worth worshiping.

Why worship a government sector that is letting down your nurses and doctors?

Because all the NHS staff are doing a wonderful job in spite of our government letting them down in many ways.
I have very good reasons myself for holding our NHS in good esteem.

5 years ago because of a leaking aortic heart valve and an ascending aorta and hemiark for a chronic type A 9 cm dissection aorta I had 11 hour heart operation and am very lucky to be alive.
Since then I have been on medication and every six months i go and have a echocardiogram every 6 months.
I have had 2 hernia operations and other stuff too much to mention.
My Medication alone would be costing me £100 a week if I had to buy it myself.
    But no.
    It is FREE.

I could say a lot more why I worship our United Kingdom NHS.
    But you get the drift!

We usually have a conference and get lots of freebies... But we had a couple of speakers on zoom this year.

Hopefully once this is all over, we'll do something big.

I'm glad you made it out alive from your heart problems. Must have been a very scary experience for sure.

But no, it's not free. It's expensive as fuck. You're paying for it through both transparent and hidden taxes that are adversely affecting everyone's standard of living.
The NHS is a monopoly without competition, so they have no incentive to lower the prices, since the only alternative is to leave the UK for medical care.

My grandfather was a surgeon back in the mid-20th century. He did free house calls on his own dime. He also allowed patients who couldn't afford the full bill of his services to pay him in alternative methods. Such as teaching his kids piano lessons. He did this for charitable purposes, and it helped his business and reputation within his community. This was what life without government-controlled medicine was like.

Worshiping the NHS to me, would be like worshiping the IRS, the president, or the CIA
